Hire a Shopify Expert: Agency or Freelancer, Costs, Process
In short: If you hire a Shopify expert to build your store, German market overviews put the cost at usually approx. €1,500 to €8,000 with freelancers, and from approx. €3,000 with agencies for simple projects and considerably more for custom stores. Whether it’s worth it depends less on your budget than on whether you have time, technical understanding and a validated product. Whoever you hire: the store must be in your name, the service provider only gets collaborator access, and services, price and handover are set out in writing.
Are you thinking about hiring a Shopify agency or freelancer, or do you want to build stores for others yourself? This article helps with both: it shows what it costs to hire a Shopify expert, how to recognize good providers, how to protect yourself from fraud and how store builders work through the Shopify Partner Program. It’s part of the overview Starting a Shopify store.
Do you even need an expert?
Honestly: many beginners don’t need an agency at the start. A store with a free theme, a few products and good legal texts is doable yourself with some patience, and AI tools now help with the build (see Creating a Shopify store with AI). Besides, no service provider can answer the most important question for you: does anyone want to buy your product?
| Building it yourself fits if … | Getting help fits if … |
|---|---|
| you have little budget but time | your time is more expensive than the service provider |
| you first want to test a product | the product already sells (e.g. on Etsy, in a shop, at markets) |
| a standard theme is enough | you need special features (personalization, B2B, integrations) |
| you enjoy learning how your store works | you’re moving from another system and need to take data, SEO and redirects with you |
A good middle ground is often: build it yourself and get help for individual tasks, such as a store audit, setting up taxes and shipping, or code customizations. When you need a developer for code is explained in Customizing Shopify code.
What does it cost to hire a Shopify expert?
There are no official prices. Every provider sets its own. For orientation, current German market overviews from Ostend Digital (German) and Qualimero (German) (both 2026, net values) give these ranges:
| Project | Typical scope | Price range according to market overviews |
|---|---|---|
| Small store via a freelancer | Theme setup, a few products, basic settings | approx. €1,500 to €8,000 |
| Agency entry-level project | Premium theme, up to approx. 50 products | approx. €3,000 to €8,000 |
| Agency standard project | customized theme, app integrations, SEO setup | approx. €8,000 to €20,000 |
| Custom store | own design, integrations, migration | approx. €20,000 to €50,000 |
| Maintenance after launch | Updates, small changes, support | approx. €100 to €500 per month |
Freelancers often bill by the hour. Qualimero cites an average of approx. €75 per hour, with a range from €45 to over €120. There are also much cheaper offers, for example on Fiverr or Upwork. They can work for clearly defined small tasks. But for a store that’s meant to sell in a legally compliant way in Germany, the knowledge about the withdrawal button, legal guarantee label, unit prices and taxes is often missing.
What’s usually not included in the price
- The Shopify subscription, theme license and app fees. You pay these yourself; see Shopify costs 2026.
- Legal texts. Reputable service providers refer you to specialized providers here instead of writing them themselves. Why is explained in Legally compliant Shopify in 2026.
- Product photos, product texts and advertising. The ad budget in particular is usually more important for the start than an expensive design. Include it in the starting capital for your online store.
Freelancer, agency, Partner Directory: where to find one?
With the Shopify Partner Directory, Shopify runs its own directory of developers, designers and marketers. You can filter by country, service and price. Partners are sorted into tiers there (Select, Plus, Premier, Platinum), depending on their experience and success on Shopify. However, Shopify emphasizes that partners work independently. So a tier doesn’t replace your own checks.
| Option | Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer (local or via networks) | cheaper, direct contact | risk of downtime due to illness or vacation, often a specialist in one area |
| Small agency | several specialists, cover, fixed processes | more expensive, sometimes minimum budgets |
| Large agency | integrations, Plus projects, design teams | usually oversized for small stores |
| Fiverr, Upwork & co. | very cheap, fast | quality varies greatly, rarely DACH legal knowledge |
Recognizing good providers: the checklist
These criteria are neutral, and you can put them to any provider, including us.
- Real references: Live stores you can look at yourself, ideally in your industry. Ask what exactly the provider did there.
- Knowledge of Germany: Can the provider explain what the withdrawal button, legal guarantee label, GPSR information and the small business rule (Kleinunternehmerregelung) mean for your store? Anyone who dodges this will probably build you a US store.
- Written offer: Services, number of revision rounds, dates, price and what is not included.
- Ownership: The store runs on your Shopify account, and theme and app licenses are tied to your store.
- Handover: Is there an onboarding session or documentation so you can maintain products, orders and content yourself?
- After launch: What does a change cost later? Is there maintenance, and is it optional?
- Few apps: Good service providers solve a lot with Shopify’s built-in tools. A long list of apps means ongoing costs for you. What’s really necessary is shown in Shopify apps for beginners.
Warning signs are revenue promises (“€300 a day guaranteed”), ready-made “winning product stores” at a fixed price, pressure to pay quickly and requests to share your password.
How to protect yourself from fraud
Yes, there are fraud risks when hiring, especially with very cheap offers via social media. Three rules keep you on the safe side:
- Never share your password. For this, Shopify has collaborator access for partners: the service provider sends an access request, you give them a 4-digit code for it and decide yourself which areas they may access. According to Shopify, you’ll find the code under Settings > Users > Security. These accounts don’t count toward your plan’s staff limit, and you can revoke them at any time.
- You are the owner. If you have the service provider create the store, it must be transferred to you at the end. Check in the settings that you are listed as the store owner and that your payment details are stored. How transfer and subscription work is explained in Shopify account & subscription.
- Pay in stages. Common practice is a deposit, a payment after design approval and the rest after acceptance. Paying 100% up front to strangers is a risk.
How a store project runs
- Briefing: What are you selling, to whom, how many products, which special features? The clearer, the more accurate the offer.
- Offer and contract: Services, price, schedule, revision rounds, handover.
- Concept and theme: Page structure, theme selection, design draft.
- Implementation: Set up the theme, create products, integrate payments, shipping, taxes, apps and legal texts.
- Testing and acceptance: Test order, mobile view, check mandatory information. Only then do you pay the final installment.
- Handover and launch: Onboarding, check access, make the store public.
For a small store, a few weeks is realistic; according to the market overviews, custom projects often take two to three months. A common reason for delays is missing content from the client: product texts, photos, logo.
The other side: building stores for clients yourself
Many comments ask the reverse: can I earn money as a freelancer with Shopify knowledge? Yes, if you can do more than click along with a tutorial. Clients pay for results: a store that is legally compliant, loads fast and sells.
The Shopify Partner Program
The Shopify Partner Program is free. You get access to test stores and, according to Shopify, can receive a monthly revenue share for referred clients, themes or apps. Shopify doesn’t state the amount on this page. For client projects, there are two ways:
| Way | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Collaborator access to the client store | The client creates the store themselves and gives you access via code. The store belongs to them from the start. | small projects, existing stores, maintenance |
| Client transfer store | You build the store in your partner area and transfer it at launch. The client then chooses their plan. | new builds, when the client doesn’t want to deal with anything |
With the second way, according to Shopify’s developer documentation, restrictions apply: no real payments during the build, only free and partner-friendly apps, and after the transfer the store isn’t eligible for promotions or free trials. For price-conscious clients, the first way is therefore often cheaper, because they can use the introductory offer themselves. Stores with Shopify Payments activated can’t be transferred.
What you should be able to do
- Theme setup, products, variants, collections, navigation
- Setting up payments, shipping and taxes correctly for Germany
- Knowing the German obligations and integrating legal texts via specialized providers instead of writing them yourself (that can fall under regulated legal services in Germany)
- Basics of HTML, CSS and Liquid for small customizations
- Clear communication: offers, schedules, handovers
Legally, as a store builder you are self-employed. Whether that counts as a trade (Gewerbe) or a freelance profession (freiberufliche Tätigkeit) is decided by the tax office case by case. How registration works is explained in Registering a trade for your online store. Clarify the details with a tax advisor.
FAQ
What does a Shopify store for a single product cost?
A one-product store with a standard theme is the smallest job. According to German market overviews, freelancer projects start at approx. €1,500 and agency projects at approx. €3,000 net. On top come the Shopify subscription, possibly a theme license and legal texts. If you only want to test one product, building it yourself with a free theme often makes more sense until it’s clear that the product sells.
Is it risky to pay someone to build my store?
The risk is manageable if you follow three rules: never share your password; grant collaborator access via code instead. Make sure you are the owner of the store. And pay in stages instead of everything in advance. Be careful with offers that come with revenue guarantees or ready-made “winning product stores”.
How do I give a freelancer access to my Shopify store?
The freelancer sends an access request for your store via their Shopify partner area. You give them the 4-digit code, which you’ll find in the admin under Settings > Users > Security. Then you confirm the request and decide which areas they may see. You can remove the access again at any time.
Can a freelancer manage multiple client stores via one account?
Yes, that’s what the free Shopify Partner Program is for. Through it, a freelancer has access to multiple client stores without creating a separate account for each one. But each store belongs to the respective client, who also pays for the subscription. The store shouldn’t run on the freelancer’s private account.
Is a YouTube course enough to work as a Shopify freelancer?
For simple tasks maybe, for complete stores in Germany usually not. Tutorials mainly show the setup. But clients expect the store to be legally compliant, taxes and shipping to be correct and the store to load fast. Build your own stores first, show results as references and specialize in an area you truly master.
Will an expert also help me choose products?
Some agencies offer advice on product range and marketing, but most build the store. Be skeptical if someone promises you products with guaranteed success. You should make the decision about what you sell yourself and test it with a small budget before putting a lot of money into design.
