How to Start a Shopify Store in Germany: The Complete 2026 Guide

In short: You can start a Shopify store in Germany in eleven steps: decide on your business model and product, sort out trade registration and taxes, choose an account and plan, set up your theme and domain, add products, configure payments and shipping, put legal texts and obligations in place, add a few apps plus consent-based tracking, go live after a test order, and then actively bring in visitors. The technical part takes one to two weeks. Budget at least about €200 to €300 for the first six months, not counting advertising and stock.

You want to start a Shopify store in Germany and are looking for a guide that doesn't stop at themes and product photos? This guide takes you from the decision to your first order, in the order that works in practice. For each step you get the key decisions, concrete numbers for Germany, typical mistakes and the right in-depth articles, so you have everything you need to open an online store with Shopify.

The 11 steps at a glance

The table shows the whole journey at a glance. The time estimates are a rough guide for a small store with only a few products, not measured values. Waiting times such as the ELSTER registration or the domain switch come on top, but run in parallel.

What is the minimum cost to start a Shopify store in Germany?

The store itself is cheap; advertising and stock are what cost money. These fixed costs are the minimum for a small store in the first six months (as of October 2026, Shopify euro prices from secondary sources, hence approximate):

ItemCost6 months
Shopify Basicapprox. €36/month, intro offer often €1/month for 3 monthsapprox. €111
Legal texts subscriptionfrom €9.90 net/monthapprox. €60–71
.de domainapprox. €5–20/yearapprox. €5–20
Trade registrationone-off approx. €15–65, depending on the municipalityapprox. €15–65
Theme and appsfree theme, free apps only€0
Total fixed costsapprox. €190–270

Without the intro offer and with one or two paid apps, you are more likely to end up at €350 to €450. On top of that come payment fees per order: with Shopify Payments on the Basic plan, approx. 2.1% + €0.30 for standard cards. Ongoing, excluding advertising and stock, expect approx. €50 to €90 per month for the subscription, legal texts, domain and payment fees. Every item with a worked example is in Shopify costs 2026: what a store really costs.

Your total starting capital depends on your business model. Our sample calculations for six months: print on demand with organic reach approx. €550–750, dropshipping with advertising approx. €1,800, your own stock as a small brand approx. €3,200. How these figures break down into fixed costs, test budget, pre-financing and buffer is shown in Starting capital for an online store: how much money do you really need?

Step 1: Decide on your business model and product

Before you sign up for Shopify, decide what you will sell and how. The model determines your starting capital, your margin and your obligations. The four common routes:

You don't need expensive tools to find the actual product. Collect ideas on TikTok, in the Meta Ad Library and in Amazon bestseller lists, check demand with Google Trends, then work out the margin and rule out legal risks, for example with the list of prohibited and regulated products. How broad your range should be is covered in One-product store, niche store or general store?. The method step by step: Finding winning products without expensive tools. Everything about your range, product data and product pages is collected in the overview Products and product range in Shopify.

Typical mistake: selling a product you have never held in your hands. Order at least one sample. You check quality and delivery time and get real material for photos at the same time.

Step 2: Sort out trade registration, taxes and your store name

If you sell regularly through Shopify with the intention of making a profit, you need a registered trade (Gewerbe) in Germany, at the latest when you go live. There is no minimum revenue threshold. Registration costs approx. €15 to €65 depending on the municipality and can be done online in many places. Afterwards, you submit the tax registration questionnaire (Fragebogen zur steuerlichen Erfassung) via ELSTER (German) within one month. Apply for your ELSTER account early; registration can take up to two weeks. Process and form fields: Registering a trade for your online store.

The most important decision in the questionnaire is the small business rule (German) (Kleinunternehmerregelung, § 19 UStG). Since 2025: previous-year revenue of no more than €25,000 and no more than €100,000 in the current year as a hard limit. In your founding year, the €25,000 limit applies. As a small business, you don't charge VAT, but you also can't deduct input VAT. How to set this up in Shopify later is explained in Setting up taxes in Shopify: small business rule, VAT & OSS. The full overview of all legal topics is in Law and taxes for Shopify stores in Germany.

Two points many people notice too late:

Also open a separate bank account for the store. It separates private and business payments and makes bookkeeping easier.

Step 3: Create your Shopify account and choose a plan

Signing up only takes minutes. Shopify currently offers three free trial days followed by three months for €1 per month, but these promotions change regularly. After that you need a paid plan, because only then is the checkout active.

  • Plan: To start, Basic at approx. €36 per month with monthly billing is enough. The former Starter plan is no longer available for new stores. Purely in terms of numbers, Grow only pays off with very high card revenue. You can switch, pause or cancel later, see Managing your Shopify account & subscription.
  • Billing: Paying yearly saves you around a quarter, but you pay the whole year in advance. For testing an idea, monthly is the more honest choice.
  • Trial: If you haven't chosen a plan, the store is paused afterwards and nothing is charged. Check current prices on the Shopify pricing page.

Not sure whether Shopify is the right fit at all? Etsy brings the buyers and takes a cut of every sale; Shopify is worth it if you want to build your own brand and bring in visitors yourself. The decision guide with a worked example: Shopify alternatives: Etsy, WooCommerce or Wix. Further questions about costs, setup and launch are answered in the overview Starting a Shopify store.

Two shortcuts with limits: AI builders deliver a decent-looking draft in minutes, but no German legal texts, taxes or suppliers (Building a Shopify store with AI: what AI builders are really worth). And your phone is enough to run the store, but a computer is much more convenient for building it (The Shopify app on your phone: what works and what you need a laptop for).

Step 4: Theme, design and domain

A free theme is enough to start. In 2026, one from the Horizon family makes sense; Shopify introduced it in May 2025 with ten free themes. Premium themes cost a one-off approx. US$150–450 and are only worth it if you are missing a specific feature. According to Shopify, theme purchases are final. Stay away from "winner theme" downloads from courses and comments. The decision in detail: Choosing a Shopify theme in 2026: free, Horizon or premium?

You customize it in the theme editor using sections and blocks, without code. Duplicate the theme first and add a few products before you start, so you can see what the pages really look like. Header, homepage and footer are explained in Customizing a Shopify theme for beginners. What only works with code is shown in Customizing Shopify code: Liquid and custom code, and whether hiring a professional is worth it in Hiring Shopify experts. All topics on themes, apps and tracking are collected in the overview Shopify design and tech.

Domain: According to the Help Center, you can't buy a .de domain through Shopify. You get it from INWX, IONOS or Strato, usually for approx. €5 to €20 per year. At the provider, set the A record to 23.227.38.65 and a CNAME for "www" to shops.myshopify.com, then connect it under Settings > Domains. It can take up to 48 hours until everything, including SSL, is working. Provider-specific details: Connecting a domain to Shopify: guide for IONOS, Strato & co.

You rarely need multiple languages and currencies at the beginning. If you do, one store with Shopify Markets is enough, see Shopify Markets: setting up multiple languages & currencies.

Step 5: Add products and structure your range

For a product to sell and be legally compliant, pay attention to four building blocks:

  • Variants: Up to three options such as color, size, material, and now up to 2,048 variants per product. Each variant has exactly one image of its own. More in Creating Shopify variants.
  • Structure: You organize products with collections, not with the category in the product. The menu under Content > Menus links to these collections. More in Shopify collections & menu.
  • Product page: It answers within seconds what the product is, what it costs in total and when it will arrive. In Germany, this includes the unit price (Grundpreis, where required), manufacturer details under the GPSR and, since 27.09.2026, the warranty label. Structure and checklist: Optimizing your Shopify product page.
  • Images: Every product photo is protected, even a phone photo. Only use supplier images with provable permission, see Product images, copyright & trademarks in your store.

Set finished products to "Active" and publish them to the Online Store sales channel, otherwise they won't show up (Adding, importing and publishing products). If the store shows "Sold out", inventory tracking is usually switched on without stock at the right location. For dropshipping and print on demand, switch it off: Shopify shows "Sold out"? How to set inventory correctly.

Step 6: Set up payments and calculate prices

For a German store, three building blocks are usually enough, all under Settings > Payments:

Payment methodSetupFee (approx., as of October 2026)
Cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop PayShopify Payments, active automaticallyBasic: 2.1% + €0.30 (standard cards), Amex/international 3.2% + €0.30
Klarnaactivate manually in Shopify Payments2.99% + €0.35
PayPalseparately via PayPal Express Checkout, business account requiredaccording to PayPal (German) 2.99% + €0.39 (domestic, as of 07.09.2026)
Prepayment (Vorkasse)manual payment methodnone

For Shopify Payments you need a SEPA-enabled euro current account (not a savings or multi-currency account), ID, proof of address and, depending on your situation, your trade registration. If Shopify Payments is your main provider, no Shopify transaction fee applies to PayPal either. With a third-party provider, you pay an extra 2% on the Basic plan. Step by step: Setting up Shopify payment methods: PayPal, Klarna, Apple Pay & co.

Plan for payouts: in Germany, a payout with Shopify Payments takes at least 3 business days, often longer for new accounts. PayPal money goes straight to your PayPal account. Why payouts can get stuck is explained in Shopify payouts: when your money arrives. How payments, payouts and price calculation fit together is shown in the overview Payments, payouts and pricing in Shopify.

Calculate your price backwards: gross price minus VAT minus goods, packaging, shipping, payment fees, returns and advertising. In our example, a €49.90 product with a €12 purchase price leaves only around €3 profit if one order costs €15 in advertising. The template: Calculating prices in your online store. Skip surcharges on individual payment methods; the fees belong in the price.

Step 7: Set up shipping and vet suppliers

You set up shipping under Settings > Shipping and delivery: shipping profile, shipping zones, rates per zone. To start, one "Germany" zone with a standard rate and free shipping above a minimum order value is enough. With tiered rates, leave the "Maximum" field of the top tier empty, otherwise some customers won't see any shipping option at all. Use the DHL private customer prices as a basis for your calculation (as of 01.01.2026): Päckchen S €4.19, parcel 2 kg €6.19 (online only), parcel 5 kg €7.69. State the delivery time as a concrete range in business days on the product page and in checkout. Everything else, including customs: Setting up shipping in Shopify: zones, rates, delivery times & customs.

If a supplier ships for you, additional rules apply. Only enable countries they deliver to. Since 01.07.2026, shipments from non-EU countries under €150 are no longer duty-free, and import VAT is due from the first euro. For customers in Germany, suppliers with an EU warehouse are therefore almost always the better choice, see Finding dropshipping suppliers: reliable, EU instead of China. You pay the supplier immediately, while the customer's money arrives days later, see The dropshipping process: what happens after the first order. And insist on neutral shipping with no supplier advertising or purchase receipt in the parcel, more in Dropshipping with your own branding. The honest overall view of the model is in the overview Shopify dropshipping in Germany.

Step 8: Put legal texts and obligations in place

Shopify's policy templates are not sufficient for Germany. You need reviewed texts from a provider with an update service, such as IT-Recht Kanzlei or Händlerbund (each from €9.90 net per month). The obligations before launch:

  • Imprint (Impressum) under § 5 DDG, privacy policy (Datenschutzerklärung), withdrawal policy (Widerrufsbelehrung) with the model withdrawal form, and terms and conditions (AGB).
  • Electronic withdrawal button (Widerrufsbutton) under § 356a BGB, mandatory since 19.06.2026: a clearly visible button, a confirmation page, and an acknowledgment of receipt with date and time.
  • Warranty label under Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960, mandatory since 27.09.2026: visible before the contract is concluded and included with the order confirmation. You only need the GARAN label if the manufacturer gives a free durability guarantee of more than 2 years (IHK Dresden (German)).
  • GPSR information on every product page: manufacturer, a responsible person in the EU for manufacturers outside the EU, product identification and warnings.
  • Packaging register LUCID: free registration, before your first shipment; for certain packaging, a paid dual system (duales System) is also required.
  • Remove the ODR link: The EU platform has been shut down since 20.07.2025.

You implement the withdrawal button and warranty label through your theme or an app. At Appsentials, we built the apps EU Withdrawal Form & Button and EU Warranty Label GARAN for this (our own apps, for disclosure). You will also find solutions from other providers in the Shopify App Store. The full checklist, including cookie consent and accessibility: Legally compliant Shopify in 2026: legal texts, withdrawal button & obligations.

For returns, you are your customer's point of contact, even if a supplier ships. Consumers have a 14-day right of withdrawal, and in the view of lawyers a return address in China is generally not permitted. How to organize this: Returns in dropshipping: withdrawal, return address & costs.

Step 9: Apps and tracking

Every app costs money, loading time and data protection effort. Shopify can do a lot itself for free: cookie banner, Shopify Forms, Shopify Messaging (formerly Shopify Email) for emails, Search & Discovery, Translate & Adapt, the "Google & YouTube" and "Facebook & Instagram" channels, and Order Printer for invoices. For Germany, add a legal text service, a solution for invoices (Invoices and bookkeeping in your Shopify store), one for shipping labels, and an implementation of the withdrawal button and warranty label. The lean starter setup: Shopify apps for beginners: the few you really need.

In dropshipping, you add an import app. For AliExpress products, DSers is the obvious choice because the free plan covers importing and bulk ordering. CJdropshipping is free to install and has a warehouse in Germany; AutoDS is worth it if you work with many suppliers. The comparison: Dropshipping apps for Shopify: AutoDS, DSers, CJ & co.

Set up tracking without code through the official channels: Google Analytics 4 via "Google & YouTube", the Meta pixel including the Conversions API via "Facebook & Instagram". In Germany, analytics and marketing tracking may only run after consent (§ 25 TDDDG). So activate the cookie banner first and update your privacy policy. Guide: Setting up tracking in Shopify: GA4, Meta pixel & consent.

Step 10: Test order and launch

Going live is one click: with a paid plan, open "Online Store" in the admin, change access from "Private" to "Public" and click "Publish store". Before that comes the check:

  1. Test order: using Shopify Payments test mode or a real order that you refund afterwards. Also check the order confirmation: are the withdrawal policy and warranty notice included, and are shipping costs and the tax display correct?
  2. Test mode off: As long as a payment provider is in test mode, real customers can't place orders.
  3. Content: no placeholder texts or demo images, all products active, a contact page with a working email address.
  4. Mobile check: click through the menu, product page, cart and checkout on a smartphone.

The complete list with legal, payment and technical sections is in Launching your Shopify store: the pre-launch checklist for 2026.

Right after going live, verify your store in Google Search Console and submit the sitemap; this isn't possible while the store is password-protected. It usually takes several months before a new store becomes visible on Google: Shopify SEO 2026: how your store gets found on Google. Also free: through the "Google & YouTube" app, your products appear in the Shopping tab. The requirements are a live store, legal texts in the footer and a verified custom domain, see Google Shopping with Shopify: setting up Merchant Center.

Step 11: Get your first sales

A new store has no visitors until you bring them there. You pay either with time or with an ad budget. The overview of all channels is in Shopify marketing: how to get your first sales.

  • With no budget: short videos on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube Shorts, Pinterest, free Google product listings, communities and micro-influencers. Expect weeks to months. Paid or gifted creators must label their posts as advertising ("Werbung"). The 30-day plan: Online store: winning customers without advertising.
  • Meta Ads: Work out in advance the maximum a sale may cost. Start with a sales campaign, a broad audience and 3–5 creatives. Technically, it works from about €1 a day; for meaningful tests, practitioners recommend more like €15 to €30 per day and ad set. Guide: Facebook Ads for Shopify: pixel, budget & first campaign.
  • TikTok Shop: available in Germany since 31.03.2025, connected to Shopify via the free TikTok app. Since 08.01.2026, TikTok usually keeps a 9% commission. Details: Connecting TikTok Shop with Shopify.
  • Email: Shopify Messaging includes 10,000 emails per month. In Germany, you may only send newsletters and cart reminders with provable consent, in practice via double opt-in: Shopify email marketing: Messaging vs. Klaviyo, double opt-in & the law.

Keep a close eye on your first orders: check them, ship quickly, answer questions right away. How to cancel, refund and handle customer inquiries is shown in Processing orders in Shopify.

The 10 most common beginner mistakes

Derived from the questions beginners keep asking under the most-watched Shopify videos:

  1. "Just testing first" without registering a trade. As soon as you accept orders, you are selling with the intention of making a profit. Registering late is an administrative offense; undeclared income is the bigger risk.
  2. Confusing revenue with profit. You calculate VAT (if you are not a small business) on the selling price, not on the profit.
  3. Using Shopify templates as legal texts. They are not tailored to German law and don't update themselves. The withdrawal button and warranty label are missing entirely from older tutorials.
  4. Copying images from the supplier or other stores. Without provable permission, this is a classic reason for a cease-and-desist letter (Abmahnung).
  5. "Winner themes" and app hoarding. Theme downloads from courses are risky, and five small apps quickly cost more than your Shopify plan.
  6. Fake scarcity and fake reviews. Countdowns that restart or "only 3 left in stock" without real stock are misleading. Bought or imported reviews are off-limits, and you must state whether you verify their authenticity. How to do it properly: Shopify reviews & trust: building compliant social proof and, for discounts with the 30-day rule, Setting up Shopify discount codes, bundles & upsells.
  7. Hiding long delivery times. Customers don't complain about delivery times they knew beforehand, but about surprising ones. Since July 2026, customs costs also come into play for goods from non-EU countries.
  8. Going live without a test order. Products in draft status, "Sold out" because of wrong inventory settings or a payment provider in test mode prevent sales without you noticing.
  9. Expecting visitors to come by themselves. With a few hundred visitors, zero sales is often still just statistics. The diagnosis in seven steps: No sales on Shopify? The diagnostic checklist.
  10. Betting your entire budget on one card. Whether it's coaching for several thousand euros or the first ad test without a stop limit: if you start without a buffer, you'll be out of test budget after a few weeks.

FAQ

How long does it take to create a Shopify store?

You can complete the technical setup of a small store in one to two weeks once your product and business model are settled. Waiting times such as the ELSTER registration or the domain switch run in parallel. Choosing a product and then building up visitor numbers usually takes much longer; expect weeks to months for that.

Can I create a Shopify store for free?

You can set it up during the free trial, but you can only sell with a paid plan. Shopify currently usually offers three months for €1 per month; after that, Basic costs approx. €36 per month. On top of that come legal texts, domain, trade registration and payment fees. For the first six months, budget at least around €200 to €300.

Does my trade have to be registered before I set up the store?

No. As long as the store is password-protected and you are only preparing the theme, products and settings, you are not selling. Registration should be done by the time you go live at the latest. For Shopify Payments, Shopify may ask for your trade registration or your VAT registration depending on your situation. So start the registration in parallel with the setup.

Which Shopify plan is enough to start with?

Basic is enough for almost all beginners. The higher Grow plan does lower the card fee, but it only pays off with a very high monthly card revenue in the five-figure range. You can switch at any time. Start with monthly billing while you are testing, and switch to yearly once it's clear the store is here to stay.

Can I use PayPal and Klarna with Shopify in Germany?

Yes. You activate Klarna as a local payment method in Shopify Payments. In Germany, PayPal doesn't run through Shopify Payments but separately via PayPal Express Checkout with a PayPal business account. If Shopify Payments is your main provider, Shopify doesn't charge an additional transaction fee on PayPal payments. The PayPal money goes straight to your PayPal account.

Do I need my own warehouse to sell with Shopify?

No. With dropshipping, print on demand or digital products, you start without a warehouse and without buying stock in advance. You are still the seller, though: you are liable to your customers, handle returns and have to keep obligations such as product safety information and packaging registration in mind. You also pay the supplier before the Shopify payout arrives.

Is Shopify a ready-made website with hosting or a marketplace?

It is ready-made store software with hosting, not a marketplace. Hosting, SSL and checkout are included in the plan; you don't need a separate hosting package. You fill in the theme, texts and products, and your customers buy on your own domain. Shopify doesn't supply goods or bring buyers: products come from you or your suppliers, and you bring in visitors yourself.

Does this guide also apply in Austria and Switzerland?

The Shopify steps do, and Shopify Payments is also available in Austria and Switzerland. Trade registration, taxes and some legal bases are different, and the references to German law don't apply there one to one. In Switzerland, customs duties and import VAT come on top for deliveries to the EU. Have legal texts created for your country and clarify tax questions locally.

When will the first sales come?

That depends on how you bring in visitors. With paid advertising, the first orders can come after a few days, but they cost test budget. Without an ad budget, via social media, Pinterest and Google, it usually takes weeks to months. So plan before launch which channel your first customers will come from.

As of: October 2026. Shopify euro prices and Payments fees partly come from secondary sources and may differ; the official Shopify pricing page is authoritative. Time estimates and cost examples are guideline values. This article is not legal or tax advice.
