Shopify Marketing: How to Get Your First Sales in Germany
In short: A new Shopify store doesn't get visitors on its own. Your first sales come through one of three routes: free content and creators, Google (free product listings, later SEO and Shopping ads) or paid ads on Meta and TikTok. Before you spend money, make the store ready to buy from and calculate the most a customer may cost you. Then test one channel consistently instead of five half-heartedly.
This Shopify marketing overview is for you if your store is up and running and the first orders now need to come in. You'll get an order of phases, a channel overview with costs, the calculation to do before your first euro of ad spend, and the legal traps that most often lead to legal warnings (Abmahnungen) in German stores. For each topic, you'll find the key takeaway and a link to the detailed article. If your store isn't ready yet, start with the complete guide to building a Shopify store.
Ready to buy first, then visitors
Marketing amplifies what your store already does. If the product page doesn't convince, PayPal or Klarna are missing, or shipping costs only show up at checkout, every extra visitor just brings extra costs. Advertising doesn't fix a store that doesn't sell; it only makes you lose money faster.
That's why every channel starts with a self-test: have someone you don't know shop in your store on their phone and watch where they hesitate. Check the imprint (Impressum), legal texts, delivery time, shipping costs and payment methods. What a good structure looks like is shown in Optimizing your Shopify product page.
The Shopify marketing roadmap: what comes first?
The phases build on each other. You don't have to implement every measure, but the order saves you money.
| Phase | Goal | Measures |
|---|---|---|
| 0: Before launch | Store ready to buy from and trustworthy | Trust elements and a review app with an authenticity notice, newsletter form with double opt-in, tracking with consent, set up Google & YouTube |
| 1: First 30 days | First visitors and sales without a budget | Short videos, micro-influencers, communities, free Google product listings |
| 2: First advertising | Measurable, plannable traffic | Calculate break-even, one channel: Meta, Google Shopping or TikTok |
| 3: More per customer | Higher cart value and repeat purchases | Email automations, discount codes, bundles, upsells |
| Ongoing | Lasting visibility | SEO for collections, products and guides |
| If nothing happens | Find the cause instead of guessing | Funnel diagnosis in seven steps |
Which channel fits your product?
The most important distinction: are people already searching for your product, or do they have to see it first to want it? Google fulfills demand; Meta and TikTok create it. The table summarizes the channels from the detailed articles.
| Channel | Costs | Time until it works | Fits if … |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short videos (TikTok, Reels, Shorts) | Time | Days to weeks, variable | your product can be shown |
| Micro-influencers and UGC | Product and shipping | Weeks | people can try out and demonstrate the product |
| Free Google product listings | €0 | Days to weeks | people search for your product |
| SEO | Time | Months | your niche has clear search terms |
| Google Shopping ads | Per click, no fixed minimum budget | Days | there's search volume and your feed is error-free |
| Meta ads | first test per product more like €300–500 | Days | your product is new or needs explaining and the margin can carry advertising |
| TikTok Shop | Usually 9% commission, plus creator commission | Days to weeks | you can ship quickly from Germany or the EU |
| TikTok ads | Campaign above $50, ad group above $20 per day | Days | you want to promote videos that perform well organically |
| Shopify Messaging (formerly Shopify Email): 10,000 emails per month free | Immediately, once you have a list | you want repeat purchases and abandoned cart recovery |
To start, choose one channel, two at most. With a €400 budget, one channel tested properly is worth more than two tested halfway.
The calculation before your first euro of ad spend
The most important number in marketing is your break-even CPA: the contribution margin left after VAT, goods, shipping, payment fee and returns. A customer acquired through advertising must not cost more than this. In the shared example from our Meta ads and dropshipping articles, with a €39.90 selling price, €14 product cost including shipping and a €1.50 returns reserve, that's around €16.89.
The break-even CPA gives you the maximum click price: break-even CPA times conversion rate. At €16.89 and a 1.5% conversion rate, a click may cost at most around €0.25. Industry analyses usually cite conversion rates between about 1 and 3%, mostly from US data. The full calculation with all cost items is in Pricing for your online store.
The ten topics in detail
First sales without an ad budget
Without a budget, you pay with time: daily short videos, Pinterest, free Google listings, communities and micro-influencers with roughly 1,000 to 20,000 followers, to whom you send your product without any obligation to post. Expect weeks to months. Creators who receive gifts must label their posts as "advertising" (Werbung). The 30-day plan and a template for reaching out to creators are in Online store: winning customers without advertising (influencers & UGC).
Trust and reviews
Trust comes from an imprint, reachable contact details, clear delivery times, well-known payment methods and genuine reviews. Shopify no longer has its own review feature; you need an app. If you display reviews, you must state right next to them whether and how you verify their authenticity. Imported supplier reviews are off-limits. How to get genuine reviews without the risk of legal warnings is explained in Shopify reviews & trust: building legally compliant social proof.
Google Shopping
With the free "Google & YouTube" app, you sync your products to Merchant Center. In Germany, they can then appear for free in the Shopping tab, in Search, in Google Images and on YouTube. The prerequisites are a live store, legal texts in the footer, contact details and your own verified domain. With Shopping, there are no keywords; your product data is the targeting. Setup and avoiding suspensions: Google Shopping with Shopify: setting up Merchant Center.
SEO
Shopify handles the technical basics such as sitemap, canonical tags and SSL automatically. Your job is the content: one main keyword per page, your own product and collection texts instead of supplier texts, maintained page titles and alt texts, internal links and a blog that answers real customer questions. Expect several months before a new store becomes visible. The guide is in Shopify SEO 2026: how your store gets found on Google.
Facebook and Instagram advertising
You need a real personal profile, a business portfolio with an ad account and the free "Facebook & Instagram" app, which sets up the pixel and Conversions API. Start with a single sales campaign, a broad audience and 3 to 5 different creatives, and only judge once at least your break-even CPA has been spent. Accounts, budget, campaign structure and metrics are explained in Facebook ads for Shopify: pixel, budget & your first campaign.
TikTok Shop and TikTok marketing
TikTok Shop has been available in Germany since March 31, 2025, and you connect it via the free TikTok app for Shopify. Orders land in Shopify; you handle refunds in TikTok Seller Center. Since January 8, 2026, TikTok generally keeps a 9% commission in Germany. With long delivery times from China, you'll hardly survive there, because TikTok measures shipping rates. Everything about it is in Connecting TikTok Shop with Shopify: how it works in Germany.
Email marketing
To start, the free Shopify Messaging app with 10,000 emails per month is enough. In Germany, you may only send newsletters and cart reminders with provable consent, in practice via double opt-in. Four automations pay off first: welcome series, abandoned checkout, post-purchase and win-back. Tool comparison with Klaviyo and Brevo, law and deliverability: Shopify email marketing: Messaging vs. Klaviyo, double opt-in & the law.
Discount codes, bundles and upsells
You create discount codes and automatic discounts in the admin under "Discounts", bundles with the free Shopify Bundles app, cross-sells with Search & Discovery. For publicly advertised price reductions, you must use the lowest price of the last 30 days as the reference price, and countdowns must show the real end of the promotion. There are many apps for timers and banner bars, including our app Countdown Timer & Banner Bar by Appsentials. The guide is in Setting up Shopify discount codes, bundles & upsells, including the 30-day rule.
Other sales channels: physical store, marketplaces, Instagram
Customers don't always have to come to your online store. Shopify can manage products, inventory and orders centrally for several channels: your shop or market stall with Shopify POS, marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay via apps, as well as Instagram and Facebook. Which integration pays off for beginners and where inventory gets mixed up is explained in Shopify POS & multichannel: connecting your shop, Amazon, eBay & Instagram.
Visitors, but no sales
Don't guess; measure where visitors drop off. Shopify's "Conversion rate breakdown" report shows this in four stages, from session to completed checkout. With only a few hundred sessions, however, zero sales are often still statistics rather than a mistake. The seven checks and a checklist to tick off are in No sales on Shopify? The diagnostic checklist in 7 steps.
Seven legal traps in marketing
US tutorials show tactics that can lead to legal warnings in Germany. This overview bundles the rules from the detailed articles.
| Measure | Rule in Germany | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Newsletter | Only with provable consent, in practice double opt-in | § 7(2) UWG, GDPR |
| Cart reminders | Count as advertising, only with consent | § 7 UWG |
| Requesting a review by email | Counts as advertising, requires consent or the narrow existing-customer exception | BGH (Federal Court of Justice), VI ZR 225/17 |
| Reviews in the store | Notice right next to them on whether and how authenticity is verified | § 5b(3) UWG |
| Strikethrough prices and discount promotions | Lowest price of the last 30 days as the reference price | § 11 PAngV |
| Countdowns and scarcity | Only real deadlines and stock levels, no timer that restarts | Annex to the UWG, no. 7 |
| Influencers and pixels | Label posts made in exchange for something as "advertising"; tracking only after consent | § 5a(4) UWG; § 25 TDDDG |
How to connect pixels and the cookie banner correctly from a technical standpoint is covered in Setting up tracking in Shopify.
FAQ
Which marketing channel is best for a new Shopify store?
It depends on the product. If people search for it specifically, Google is the obvious starting point, first with the free product listings, later with Shopping ads. If people have to see a product first to want it, short videos, creators and later Meta or TikTok ads are a better fit. More important than the perfect channel is that you test one of them consistently over several weeks.
How much ad budget do I need at the start?
For organic marketing, you don't need a budget, just time and product samples. For a first test with Meta ads, you should plan for more like €300 to €500 per product, money you must be prepared to lose entirely; if you test several products one after another, you need correspondingly more. The exact amount follows from your break-even CPA: every test should be allowed to spend at least two to three times that before you judge it.
How do I know which channel is really bringing me sales?
What counts are the orders in Shopify, not the ad platforms' numbers. Meta, Google and TikTok only count what tracking and cookie consent capture, and they use their own attribution windows. Add UTM parameters to your ad links and give creators their own discount codes. Then you'll see in Shopify's reports which campaign or post brought in the order.
Do I need social media profiles if I only want to run ads?
Yes, at least the basics. For Meta ads, you need a Facebook Page for your brand and a personal profile as the login; for TikTok Shop, a TikTok for Business account. A large follower count isn't necessary. Create the profiles under your store's name and use the same logo everywhere. Videos that perform well organically are often your best ads later on.
Is marketing worth it for a store with very cheap products?
Organic marketing, yes; paid advertising, usually not. With products under about €20 and a thin margin, the contribution margin is rarely enough to pay for a customer acquired through ads, because a single sale there can easily cost €10 to €30. The levers then are a higher cart value through bundles and free shipping thresholds, repeat purchases via email and channels that only cost time.
