Shopify Apps for Beginners: The Few You Really Need in Germany

In short: When it comes to Shopify apps for beginners, you need fewer than YouTube videos suggest. Shopify does a lot itself for free: cookie banner, forms, email, search and filters, translations and the connection to Google and Meta. For Germany, you add a legal texts service, a solution for invoices, a tool for shipping labels and solutions for the withdrawal button and the legal guarantee label. Everything else you install only when a specific problem calls for it.

There are thousands of apps in the Shopify App Store, and every tutorial recommends different ones. This article sorts them for you: which Shopify apps for beginners you really need, what Shopify already includes for free, which additional obligations stores in Germany have, and which apps you should skip. It is part of our overview Shopify design & technology.

Shopify apps for beginners: every app has to earn its place

Every app costs you in three ways:

  • Money: Many apps cost a single-digit to low double-digit dollar amount per month. Five of them can quickly add up to more than your Shopify plan.
  • Load time: Apps that are visible in the store often load their own scripts. Several of them slow your store down, especially on mobile.
  • Data protection effort: If an app processes customer data or sets cookies, you have to account for it in your privacy policy and cookie banner.

Before every installation, ask yourself two questions: Can Shopify already do this itself? And do I need it now, or only at 100 orders a month? What the running costs look like overall is shown in what Shopify really costs.

What Shopify does itself for free

Many functions that used to require third-party apps are now provided by Shopify itself or as a free Shopify app:

The German must-haves

US tutorials leave out exactly the points that can get expensive in Germany. You need these solutions before going live, whether as an app or some other way.

Imprint (Impressum), terms and conditions (AGB), cancellation policy (Widerrufsbelehrung) and privacy policy (Datenschutzerklärung) must fit your store and be updated when laws change. Shopify's policy templates are no substitute: they are generic, not tailored to your business model under German law, and don't update themselves. The usual approach is a subscription with a specialized provider such as IT-Recht Kanzlei (German) or Händlerbund (German). Before signing up, ask whether and how the texts are updated automatically in Shopify. Everything that belongs to this is covered in protecting your Shopify store against warning letters.

Shopify comes with its own cookie banner. According to the Shopify Help Center, it is configured automatically for visitors from the EEA and the UK if you have active markets there. Non-essential data is then only collected after consent. For a beginner store that only uses Shopify's own channels such as Google & YouTube or Facebook & Instagram, this is usually enough.

You need a consent app from the App Store's cookie consent category if you integrate tools that the Shopify banner doesn't control, such as manually added scripts. In that case, according to Shopify, you first have to remove the built-in banner and set the same regions in both systems.

3. Invoices

In Germany, there is generally no obligation to issue an invoice to consumers. But customers expect one, and business customers are entitled to one. For B2B: according to the DIHK (German), paper and PDF invoices are still allowed until the end of 2026, and until the end of 2027 for smaller businesses. Small businesses under the small business rule (Kleinunternehmerregelung, § 19 UStG) are exempt from the obligation to send e-invoices.

  • Free: Shopify Order Printer. The templates are customizable, but you have to rework them yourself so that all mandatory invoice details are included, including a note on the small business rule if you use it.
  • More convenient: Invoicing apps such as Sufio (from US$7 per month, also in German) create and send invoices automatically.
  • Via your accounting: If you use an accounting tool, check whether it has a Shopify integration. Then the invoice and the booking are created in one step.

Which mandatory details belong on the invoice and which accounting tools work with Shopify is covered in invoices and bookkeeping in a Shopify store.

4. Shipping labels

If you ship yourself, you don't want to type labels by hand. Shipping tools like Sendcloud pull orders from Shopify, create labels for DHL, DPD and others, and send the tracking number back. According to the App Store, Sendcloud has a free plan; you pay for the labels separately. Alternatively, the carriers offer their own solutions. Compare which one fits your parcel volume. How to set up shipping zones and prices in Shopify is covered in setting up shipping in Shopify.

5. Electronic withdrawal button (since 19 June 2026)

Since 19 June 2026, online stores need an electronic withdrawal function under § 356a BGB (German Civil Code): a clearly visible button that customers can use to withdraw during the withdrawal period, a confirmation page, and an acknowledgment of receipt with date and time. Check whether your theme or your legal texts provider already covers this. If not, there are apps for it, for example our app EU Withdrawal Form & Button by Appsentials. It adds a withdrawal button and withdrawal form to your store, sends customers a confirmation email and monitors the 14-day period; there is a free plan. Feel free to compare several providers in the App Store.

Since 27 September 2026, Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 applies: before the contract is concluded, a harmonized notice about the statutory legal guarantee must be clearly visible, for example on the product page or at checkout, and it also belongs in the order confirmation. According to IHK Dresden (German), the GARAN label is only required if the manufacturer offers a free durability guarantee of more than two years. There are apps for this too, including our app EU Warranty Label GARAN. It shows the harmonized notice with the official template and QR code as a block on the product page; the GARAN label per product and a snippet for the order confirmation are available on the Pro plan. Here too: check alternatives and pay attention to the requirements of the regulation.

Useful, but not from day one

Apps you should skip

  • Fake "just purchased" pop-ups: Many tutorials still recommend "Sales Pop by Beeketing". The app no longer exists. More importantly: pop-ups with invented purchases deceive customers and can draw warning letters (Abmahnungen) as misleading advertising. If at all, use them only with real order data.
  • Artificial countdowns: A timer that restarts on every visit is also misleading. Countdowns only make sense for genuine, time-limited promotions.
  • "Speed booster" apps: An app that is supposed to make your store faster loads code itself. Your store gets faster mainly through fewer apps and smaller images.
  • Page builders from day one: Current free themes offer enough design freedom for the start.

Installing and removing Shopify apps cleanly

  1. Read the reviews, especially the bad ones: They show whether support responds and whether there are problems with themes.
  2. Check the costs: App fees run through your Shopify bill, usually in US dollars. Watch out for trial periods and usage-based extra costs.
  3. Check compatibility: If the App Store says "not compatible", the app doesn't support your country or your plan.
  4. Activate via the theme editor: Modern apps work with app blocks and app embeds that you switch on and off in the editor without copying code.
  5. Update your data protection documents: Add the new app to your privacy policy and, if necessary, the cookie banner.
  6. Uninstall cleanly: After removing an app, check whether any leftovers are visible in the store. Some older apps wrote code directly into the theme that doesn't disappear on uninstall. In that case, a look at the theme code or the app provider's support helps. After a theme change, you also have to reactivate app blocks and app embeds in the new theme.

Can't find the app from the tutorial?

This is one of the most common questions under Shopify videos. Apps regularly disappear from the App Store, get renamed or are discontinued. Shopify discontinued Oberlo in 2022, for example, and the Beeketing apps no longer exist either. Here's what to do:

  • Search for the function, not the name: For example "product reviews" or "dropshipping AliExpress" instead of an old app name.
  • Check Shopify's own solutions first: A lot of what old videos show can now be done by Shopify itself, see the table above.
  • Check how current it is: The date of the latest reviews and support replies show whether an app is maintained.

If the App Store says "not available", the app has been removed. And some store builder apps from videos only work if the store was created via the YouTuber's partner link. That's not your fault. You can build a store without such apps using a free theme.

FAQ

How much do Shopify apps cost?

It ranges from free to three-figure amounts per month. Many apps have a free plan with limits and paid tiers in the single-digit to low double-digit dollar range per month. Billing is via your Shopify bill, usually in US dollars. Watch out for trial periods that automatically turn into a subscription, and for usage-based costs such as fees per order or per label.

What should I use instead of "Sales Pop by Beeketing"?

Ideally, nothing comparable. The Beeketing apps are no longer in the App Store. With similar apps, make sure only real purchases are shown. Invented purchase notifications are misleading and can draw warning letters in Germany. If you want to show social proof, use real reviews from real customers. That's more credible and legally sound.

Which app should I use for DHL shipping labels?

You can use a shipping tool like Sendcloud, which imports orders from Shopify, creates labels for DHL and other carriers and sends the tracking number back to Shopify. DHL also offers its own solutions for business customers. Compare label prices, because with a business customer contract you usually pay less than with consumer prices.

Do apps make my store slower?

Apps that display or track something in the store usually load their own scripts and can increase load time, especially on mobile. Apps that only work in the background in the admin, such as for invoices, hardly affect load time. After every new app, check whether your store gets noticeably slower, and remove apps you no longer use.

Can I install the CJ Dropshipping app and AutoDS in one store?

Technically, yes. What matters is that each product is managed by only one app. Otherwise prices, inventory or orders overwrite each other. For the start, a single dropshipping app is almost always the better choice. Which one fits your supplier depends on the product range and the shipping country.

Can I have a custom Shopify app built?

Yes. A developer can build a custom app just for your store, for example for an interface to your inventory management system or special order logic. This only pays off if no ready-made app solves your problem, because development, hosting and maintenance cost money on an ongoing basis. Get written confirmation that the code and access belong to you. What to look for when choosing is covered in hiring Shopify experts.

Can I use Shopify's legal text templates?

We advise against it for German stores. The templates are generic, not tailored to your business model under German law, and are not updated automatically when laws change. Obligations like the withdrawal button since June 2026 show how quickly requirements change. A subscription with a specialized provider that includes an update service is the safer solution.
