Shopify Dropshipping in Germany: An Honest Overview for 2026
In short: Shopify dropshipping in Germany is legal and doable, but it isn't passive income. You are the seller with all the obligations; the supplier only ships. If you start in 2026, first calculate your margin including ad costs, choose suppliers with an EU warehouse and plan returns via an address in Germany or the EU. Since July 1, 2026, small parcels from China are no longer duty-free, which makes direct shipping from the Far East even less attractive.
This overview is for you if you want to start Shopify dropshipping in Germany and want to know what to do in which order: calculate, supplier, app, shipping, order process, returns, branding. For each step, you'll find the key takeaway and a link to the detailed article. If you're right at the beginning and first need to set up a store at all, start with our complete guide to building a Shopify store.
How dropshipping with Shopify works
With dropshipping, you sell goods you don't store yourself. The customer orders and pays in your Shopify store, you order from the supplier with the customer's address, and the supplier ships directly. That saves you a warehouse and buying stock in advance. But it doesn't shift any responsibility: legally, the customer concludes the sales contract with you.
| Who | Does what | Doesn't do what |
|---|---|---|
| You | Store, prices, marketing, customer service, legal texts, withdrawal and legal guarantee, paying the supplier | Storing, packing, shipping |
| Supplier | Stores, packs, ships to your customer | Isn't liable to your customer, doesn't provide customer service |
| Dropshipping app | Imports products, forwards orders, transfers tracking numbers | Is neither supplier nor shipping company, pays nothing for you |
| Shopify | Store, checkout, payment processing, order management | Checks neither suppliers nor legal texts |
The point many courses leave out: you pay the supplier immediately, but Shopify only pays out the customer's money to you after at least 3 business days, often later for new accounts. On a good advertising day, you therefore advance the entire cost of goods.
The roadmap: what comes first?
The most common question under dropshipping videos is roughly: "Where do I start?" Our answer is a fixed order. Each step builds on the previous one, and if you skip one, you'll pay for it later.
- Calculate before you build. What's left per order after tax, product cost, fees and advertising? Without this number, you can't evaluate any product or campaign.
- Find a product and check the margin. First a product with enough room, then the store around it.
- Vet suppliers. Shipping origin, delivery time, return rules, product safety, packaging registration, test order.
- Connect the right app. One app per supplier, not three in parallel.
- Set up shipping. Only enable countries the supplier delivers to, state honest delivery times.
- Sort out legal matters and returns. Registered business, legal texts, withdrawal button, legal guarantee label, return address.
- Test the order process. A real test order from payment to shipping confirmation email.
- Add branding later. Neutral shipping from day 1; inserts and your own packaging only once a product is selling.
The seven topics in detail
Is dropshipping worth it at all?
In our sample calculation, out of a €39.90 selling price, after VAT, product cost, payment fee and a returns reserve, about €17 is left before advertising. If a customer costs €15 via ads, less than €2 per order remains; at €20, you make a loss. On top of that come realistic fixed costs of €90 to €130 per month. The full calculation with a break-even table is in Is dropshipping still worth it in 2026? An honest calculation instead of course hype. How to apply the calculation to your own product is shown in Pricing for your online store, and you can find out which products carry enough margin at all with the method from Finding winning products.
Finding and vetting suppliers
You can find suppliers in four ways: Chinese marketplaces such as AliExpress, platforms with EU suppliers such as Syncee, Spocket or BigBuy, German wholesalers offering drop shipment (Streckengeschäft), and manufacturers for private labels. What matters isn't the source but the vetting: shipping origin per product, return rules, manufacturer and responsible person under the GPSR, LUCID registration and a test order to yourself. The full checklist is in Finding dropshipping suppliers: reliable, EU instead of China.
The right dropshipping app
For AliExpress, DSers is the obvious entry point, because the free plan already handles import, bulk ordering and tracking sync. CJdropshipping is free to install and lists Frankfurt as a warehouse location; AutoDS only pays off with many suppliers. Important: each product should be managed by only one app. Prices, plans and the question "Which app for whom?" are covered in Dropshipping apps for Shopify: AutoDS, DSers, CJ & co. compared.
Shipping, delivery times and customs
Even if the supplier ships, you set in Shopify what the customer pays at checkout and which countries you deliver to. Only enable countries your supplier serves, state the delivery time as a concrete range in business days and create separate shipping profiles for different suppliers. For goods from non-EU countries: import VAT applies from the first euro, and since July 1, 2026, customs duty applies even below €150. The guide with zones, rate types, DHL prices and IOSS is in Setting up shipping in Shopify: zones, rates, delivery times & customs.
What happens after the first order
The process has seven steps: the customer pays, the order lands in the app, you check it, order and pay at the supplier, the supplier ships, the tracking number comes back to Shopify, and your customer gets the shipping email. Start semi-automatically, meaning with a review step before forwarding, and only automate once you know your supplier's mistakes. Money flow, sources of error and a checklist for the first ten orders are in Dropshipping process: what happens after the first order. Why the money from Shopify arrives later than the supplier's invoice is explained in Shopify payouts: when your money arrives.
Returns and refunds
For withdrawals and complaints, you're the point of contact, not the supplier. The customer has a 14-day right of withdrawal; you refund within 14 days of the withdrawal, but you may wait until the goods are back or proof of shipment has been provided. In the view of legal experts, a return address in China is likely to be inadmissible in most cases, because it burdens consumers with customs formalities and extra costs. Three practical return models and how to handle them in Shopify are in Returns in dropshipping: withdrawal, return address & costs.
Your own branding
Branding doesn't start with a printed box but with neutral shipping: no supplier advertising, no receipt showing your purchase price in the parcel. Next come the inexpensive digital levers such as shipping emails, a tracking page and an invoice with your logo. Inserts, your own packaging and private label only pay off once sales are stable and, depending on their scope, make you responsible for packaging and product. The five branding levels and their legal consequences are explained in Dropshipping with your own branding: packaging, invoice, inserts. The logical next step after that is your own brand instead of dropshipping.
Four supplier setups compared
Most stores end up with one of these four combinations.
| Setup | Delivery time to DE | Customs and import tax | Returns | App fixed costs | Fits for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AliExpress via DSers | Long and variable | Yes, since July 1, 2026 customs duty also below €150 | Difficult; returning to China is unreasonable | €0 on the free plan | Product tests on a small budget |
| CJdropshipping with EU warehouse | Shorter, if the product really is in the EU warehouse | No, when shipped from the EU | Doable, coordinate with the supplier | App free, optional membership | Low purchase prices plus shorter delivery |
| EU platform (Syncee, Spocket, BigBuy) | Usually a few business days | No | Doable within the EU | Monthly subscription | Stores that want to promise fast delivery |
| German wholesaler with drop shipment | Shortest | No | Domestic, often well organized | No app needed, possibly minimum turnover | Stores with a clear niche and proof of business registration |
On the customs row: under Regulation (EU) 2026/382, shipments up to €150 imported via IOSS or as postal items are subject to a customs duty of €3 per item. It's counted per tariff heading, not per piece and not per parcel: a parcel with items from three different headings costs €9 in duty, plus import VAT. The flat rate is limited until July 1, 2028; after that, goods are to be cleared regularly according to the customs tariff. What matters for you is the direction: direct shipping from non-EU countries is getting more expensive, not cheaper.
Your obligations for Shopify dropshipping in Germany: the checklist
The fact that the supplier ships doesn't release you from any obligation. These points apply to every dropshipping store that sells to consumers in Germany.
| Obligation | What you specifically need | Done? |
|---|---|---|
| Registered business | Trade registration (Gewerbeanmeldung) at the trade office by the time you launch at the latest, then the questionnaire from the tax office | ☐ |
| Legal texts | Imprint (Impressum), privacy policy, terms and conditions (AGB), withdrawal notice (Widerrufsbelehrung) with the return address you actually use | ☐ |
| Withdrawal button (since June 19, 2026) | Clearly visible button, confirmation page, acknowledgment of receipt with date and time (§ 356a BGB) | ☐ |
| Legal guarantee label (since September 27, 2026) | Harmonized notice before the contract is concluded and with the order confirmation (IHK Dresden (German)) | ☐ |
| Product safety (GPSR) | Manufacturer with address and email, for non-EU manufacturers the responsible person in the EU, image, warnings in German (Regulation (EU) 2023/988) | ☐ |
| Packaging Act (Verpackungsgesetz) | Proof that the supplier is registered in the LUCID packaging register and has licensed the packaging; otherwise register yourself | ☐ |
| Taxes | Small business rule (Kleinunternehmer) or standard taxation set up correctly in Shopify | ☐ |
| Data protection | Disclosure of customer addresses to the supplier in your privacy policy | ☐ |

Typical mistakes in the first month
- Worldwide shipping enabled: You can't fulfill orders from countries your supplier doesn't deliver to.
- Delivery time glossed over: Customers rarely complain about long delivery times they knew about beforehand, but about surprising ones.
- No buffer for prepaying: You pay the supplier immediately; the customer's money arrives days later.
- Full automation from day 1: Without a review step, typos, wrong variants and fraudulent orders go straight out.
If dropshipping seems too risky after this list: print on demand with Shopify is often the simpler alternative for beginners with their own designs.
FAQ
Do I need to have the products myself or buy them in advance?
No. With dropshipping, you only import product data and images into your store; that costs nothing and commits you to nothing. Only once a customer has ordered and paid do you buy exactly that item from the supplier and have it shipped directly to the customer. Shopify itself doesn't supply products; it's just your store system. You still need money, because you pay the supplier before Shopify pays out the purchase price to you.
Can I start dropshipping without registering a business?
No, not if you sell regularly and with the intention of making a profit. Then you're running a business and must register it by the time you launch at the latest. In practice, you won't get far without registration anyway: most wholesalers won't open a merchant account for you without proof of business registration, and Shopify Payments may require a trade registration depending on the situation. Registration costs about €15 to €65 depending on the municipality.
Do I need my own address in Germany for dropshipping?
You don't need a warehouse, but you do need an address. Your imprint must include an address where legal documents can be served (ladungsfähige Anschrift), and for returns, an address in Germany or the EU is the legally safest solution, because according to the prevailing view of legal experts, a return address in China is likely to be inadmissible in most cases. Especially at the start, your own business address is the simplest way to do this, even if returns then land with you.
How much money do I need to start dropshipping?
For the first six months without your own inventory, you should plan for about €500 if you start purely organically, and about €2,000 if you run ads. Only a small part of that goes to the store, domain and legal texts. The biggest item is the advertising and testing budget, plus a buffer, because you pay suppliers before Shopify pays out. It doesn't work with no money at all.
Dropshipping or print on demand: which is better for beginners?
That depends on what you want to sell. Print on demand fits if you offer your own designs or personalized products. You then have a product that not every store carries identically, and production partners in the EU too. Classic dropshipping fits better if you want to test merchandise before you buy stock. Both models have thin margins and the same German obligations.
Can I run dropshipping under the small business rule?
Yes. As long as your revenue didn't exceed €25,000 in the previous year and doesn't exceed €100,000 in the current year, you can use the small business rule (Kleinunternehmerregelung). You then don't charge VAT, which improves your contribution margin per order, but you also can't deduct input VAT. All other merchant obligations, from legal texts to product safety, apply unchanged.
