Shopify Product Page Optimization: A Layout That Sells
In short: Shopify product page optimization starts here: a good page answers three questions within seconds: What is it, what does it cost in total, and when will it arrive? At the top go images, title, price with tax and shipping note, variant picker and buy button; below that, details, reviews and delivery info. In Germany, you also need mandatory information such as the unit price (Grundpreis), manufacturer details under the GPSR and, since 27.09.2026, the legal guarantee label. You build this with a single product template plus metafields, not with a separate page per product.
The product page is where visitors become buyers or leave. In this article, you’ll learn the essentials of Shopify product page optimization: which layout works, which information is mandatory in Germany and how to use templates without building every product individually. It is part of our overview Products and assortment in Shopify.
The layout from top to bottom
Most visitors arrive on their phones. What they see without scrolling decides whether they stay. This order has proven itself:
| Area | Content | Implementation in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Top (visible immediately) | Image gallery, product title, price incl. VAT and shipping note, unit price if applicable, variant picker, buy button, delivery time | Product information section in the product template |
| Directly below | 3 to 5 benefit points, payment methods, shipping and returns in brief | Text or icon blocks, collapsible rows |
| Middle | Detailed description, dimensions, material, care, size chart | Description plus collapsible rows with metafields |
| Bottom | Reviews, questions and answers, manufacturer details, related products | Review app, “Related products” section |
You change the order of blocks in the theme editor by drag and drop. Whether the description sits next to or below the images, and whether the images scroll along, is a theme setting. In many themes it’s called “Sticky” or something like “keep content fixed while scrolling”. If you can’t find it, your theme doesn’t offer it. It’s similar with the gallery layout (thumbnails, carousel or stacked), image zoom and image size on desktop: these options, if available, are in the settings of the Product information section. More on choosing a theme in Choosing a Shopify theme.
Mandatory information in Germany
Many US guides leave this part out completely. In Germany, it belongs on every product page:
- Price including VAT and a note on shipping costs: In distance selling, you must state that the price includes VAT and whether delivery and shipping costs apply (§ 6 PAngV, the German Price Indication Ordinance). The usual wording is “incl. VAT, plus shipping” (inkl. MwSt., zzgl. Versand) with a link to the shipping page. If you’re a small business owner without VAT (Kleinunternehmer), you word this differently.
- Unit price (Grundpreis): For goods sold by weight, volume, length or area, you usually need the price per 1 kg, 1 l, 1 m or 1 m². Shopify has a unit price field in the pricing area for this, and all Online Store 2.0 themes display it (Shopify Help Center).
- Strikethrough prices: If you show a reduced price with a “compare-at price”, the reference price must be the lowest price of the last 30 days before the reduction. IHK Köln (German) summarizes the rules on price indications.
- Delivery time: This is part of the pre-contractual information. A concrete statement such as “Delivery time 2 to 4 business days” is better than “fast”.
- Essential characteristics: Material, dimensions, contents, compatibility. Everything that matters for the purchase decision.
- Manufacturer details and safety information (GPSR): Name and address as well as electronic address of the manufacturer, for manufacturers outside the EU the responsible person in the EU, a product image and identifier, and warnings and safety information. This information must be in the offer, so before the purchase (Regulation (EU) 2023/988, Art. 19).
- Legal guarantee label: Since 27.09.2026, you must clearly display the harmonized notice on the statutory guarantee (Gewährleistung) before the contract is concluded, for example on the product page, and also send it with the order confirmation on a durable medium. You only need the GARAN label for the durability guarantee if the manufacturer offers a free durability guarantee of more than two years (IHK Dresden (German)).
It’s best to maintain the manufacturer details in metafields and display them in a collapsible row (how that works is explained below). You’ll find the full overview of imprint (Impressum), withdrawal and more in Protecting your Shopify store against warning letters.
Product images: format, rights, AI
Format: Shopify accepts JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF and HEIC, among others. An image must be smaller than 20 MB and can be up to 5,000 × 5,000 pixels or 25 megapixels; up to 250 media are possible per product (Shopify Help Center). More important than the maximum size is a consistent aspect ratio: if all product images are square (or all 4:5), the gallery and collection pages look calm and tidy. Many themes also let you set the aspect ratio of images on product cards.
Image suddenly sideways? This usually happens with phone photos that only store their orientation in the metadata. Open the image in an image editor, rotate it correctly there and export it again as JPEG or WebP. Then the orientation is kept.
What to show? A clear main image on a neutral background that also works in Google Shopping, then detail shots, the product in use, an image with a size comparison and, for clothing, the size and height of the model. The latter belongs in the text or caption, not large on the main image.
Images from the supplier: Simply taking photos from AliExpress, CJ Dropshipping or other sellers without permission is risky. Photos are protected by copyright, and brands on products are a separate issue. The details are in the article Product images and trademarks in your store. Your own photos are also a real advantage over the many stores with identical images.
AI images: AI-generated scenes can work as mood images. But the product itself must look exactly like the goods that arrive. Otherwise you risk returns and accusations of misleading customers.
Taking your own product photos
For most products, a current smartphone is enough. What matters is light and stability: shoot in daylight close to a window or with two continuous lights from the left and right, use a tripod and a white board or a sweep as the background. You don’t need Photoshop to cut out products; many tools remove the background automatically. Have models confirm in writing that you may use the photos in your store and in advertising. With print on demand, the provider’s mockups are a good start, but a sample with your own photos is more credible.
Videos and 3D models
You upload videos to the product’s media just like images. Shopify accepts MP4, MOV and WebM up to 1 GB and 10 minutes long, at most in 4K. Alternatively, you embed a YouTube or Vimeo video; other video sources aren’t supported. Shopify streams videos in 480p to 1080p depending on the connection, so the file size slows the page down less than with images. How vertical videos look and whether a video loops is determined by your theme. Instead of animated GIFs, a short MP4 is usually sharper and smaller. For a 360-degree view, you upload a 3D model as GLB or USDZ (up to 500 MB). Only Online Store 2.0 and Horizon themes display videos and 3D models (Shopify Help Center).
Product copy that sells
Good product copy isn’t a block of running text. This structure has proven itself:
- One sentence on who it’s for and what it’s for: “Waterproof jacket for dog owners who have to go out in any weather.”
- 3 to 5 benefit points: What the customer gets out of it, not just what’s built in.
- Facts: Material, dimensions, weight, care, what’s included.
- Answer objections: Will it fit on my balcony? Will the shirt shrink?
Shopify offers an AI writing assistant (Shopify Magic) in the admin. Whether you see it depends on language and region. Use it as a draft, not as finished copy. Generic AI copy sounds the same in every store. The same applies to texts a dropshipping app imports from the supplier: they are often poorly translated and just as protected as photos. Rewrite them.
Input field for names or engraving: A text field where customers enter a name or phone number doesn’t belong in the description but in the product options. How that works with theme blocks or apps like Teeinblue is covered in Selling personalized products with Shopify.
Print on demand with many designs: If 50 shirts share the same base description, write two or three sentences of your own for each design (idea, occasion, who it’s for) and put the technical data below. The technical data is best pulled from a metafield, so you only maintain it once.
The meta description for Google, by the way, is no place for 300 words. Google only shows a short snippet there. How to write titles and descriptions for search engines is explained in Shopify SEO.
Templates and metafields: one page for all products
“I change the product page of one product, and it changes for all of them.” That’s not a bug, it’s intended. By default, all products use the same template, and according to Shopify, changes to a template affect all pages that use it. That’s actually practical: you build the page once and don’t have to design every product individually.
Product-specific content with metafields
For content that differs per product (care instructions, dimensions, manufacturer details), you use metafields:
- In Settings, in the area for metafields and custom data, create a metafield definition for products, for example “Care instructions”.
- In each product, enter the text in the metafields area at the bottom.
- In the theme editor, add a Collapsible row block to the product template, enter a heading and connect the content to the metafield via the dynamic source icon.
The row only appears for products that have a value in the metafield (guide in the Help Center). This gives you the familiar tabs or accordions such as “Description, Shipping, Dimensions, Care”, without an app and with different content per product.
Alternate template for other product groups
If some products need a completely different layout, such as a bundle with its own landing page, create a second template:
- Online Store > Themes > Customize, open the template selector at the top, choose Products and click Create template.
- Give it a name and choose the default product template as the base.
- In the product, select the new template in the Theme template area and save.
For many products at once, you can do this in the bulk editor via the “Template” column (Shopify Help Center). The fastest way to create similar new products is “Duplicate”. Text, images and template are copied along.
Template doesn’t appear in the selection
According to Shopify, the selection in the product only shows templates from the currently published theme. If you built the template in an unpublished theme or a copy, it only appears once you publish that theme. If the “Create template” button is missing entirely, you’re probably using an older theme without Online Store 2.0. Templates can only be renamed or deleted in the code editor. Products whose template has been deleted fall back to the default template (Shopify Help Center). When further changes to the code are worth it is explained in Customizing Shopify code.
When you switch to a different theme, products, descriptions, images and metafields are kept. However, you set up the sections and blocks of the product template again in the new theme.
Trust and purchase triggers without tricks
- Express checkout buttons: The “dynamic checkout buttons” (such as PayPal, Apple Pay, Shop Pay) can be turned on and off in the product information block. They make sense for single products and impulse purchases. In stores where customers usually buy several products, they distract from the cart. Test both. Which payment methods you should offer is covered in Setting up payment methods in Shopify.
- Real reviews: Reviews with photos are more convincing than any trust badge. How to get your first ones is explained in Building trust in your store.
- Shipping and returns, short and concrete: “Shipping with DHL, 2 to 4 business days, 14-day right of withdrawal” in one line below the button.
- No false scarcity: “Only 3 left” with full stock, or countdowns that restart on every page view, are misleading and can lead to a warning letter (Abmahnung). Real promotions with a real end date are fine.
Loading time: Every app that displays something on the product page loads its own code. After each new app, check with PageSpeed Insights whether the page gets noticeably slower, and uninstall apps you no longer use. Current Shopify themes are designed for mobile devices out of the box. Still, test every change on your phone.

FAQ
Do I have to design a separate product page for each product?
No. Every product automatically has its own page with its own URL, but they all use the same product template. You design the template once in the theme editor. Different content such as care instructions or dimensions comes in via metafields. You only need a second template if a product group should have a fundamentally different layout.
Can I use product images from AliExpress or my supplier?
Only with permission from the rights holder. Photos are protected by copyright, even if they are freely accessible on a seller platform. Some suppliers explicitly allow their sellers to use them; get that in writing. If the images show third-party brands or logos, trademark law also comes into play. Your own photos are legally safe and set you apart from other stores.
What format should product images have in Shopify?
Above all, a consistent aspect ratio matters, usually square or 4:5. Shopify allows images under 20 MB and up to 5,000 × 5,000 pixels or 25 megapixels. An edge length of about 2,000 pixels is enough for zoom and sharp display on large screens. Compress the files before uploading, use JPEG or WebP and give them meaningful file names and alt texts.
How do I get tabs like “Shipping” and “Care” on the product page?
With the “Collapsible row” block, which most current themes offer in the product template. For content that is the same for all products, such as shipping info, you write the text directly in the block. For content that differs per product, you connect the block to a metafield. You usually don’t need an app for this.
How do I duplicate a product without retyping the description?
Open the product in the admin and choose “Duplicate”. Shopify creates a copy with the description and settings; you can copy the images too. Then you change the title, images and the details that differ. Even more efficient is moving shared text blocks such as material and care into metafields. Then you maintain them centrally and don’t have to touch every product individually when something changes.
Why isn’t my product showing in the store even though it’s active?
First check whether the product is published to the Online Store sales channel. You can see this in the product in the publishing area. Then check whether it’s in the collection your menu or button links to. If the page shows “Sold out”, inventory tracking with a stock of 0 is usually active. A test purchase in an incognito window shows you what customers really see. All steps around status and visibility are covered in Adding products in Shopify and making them visible.
Why do my product images look blurry or compressed in Shopify?
Shopify automatically creates smaller versions of every image for the different areas of the theme and delivers them in the format the browser handles best. If an image looks blurry, the original file was usually too small. Shopify recommends 2,048 × 2,048 pixels for square product images. Files of a few hundred KB are not a problem.
