Shopify Product Variants: Sizes, Colors & Images per Variant

In short: In Shopify, variants are created from up to three options such as color, size or material. Up to 2,048 variants per product are now possible; the old limit of 100 variants no longer applies. Each variant gets exactly one image of its own. If you need several images per color, more than three options or free-text input, you solve that with your theme or an app.

You want to sell a T-shirt in five colors and six sizes, coffee in 250 g and 1 kg, or posters in three formats? Then you need Shopify product variants. In this article you will learn how to set up variants in Shopify properly, assign images correctly, set up color swatches, and when a separate product is the better choice. It is part of our overview Products and product range in Shopify.

Options, values, variants: the terms

Shopify distinguishes three levels. An option is the attribute customers choose by, such as "Color". The option values are its characteristics, such as "Black", "White", "Navy". A variant is a specific combination of all options, for example "Black / M". Each variant has its own price, its own stock keeping unit (SKU), its own inventory and its own weight.

The number of variants grows quickly: 5 colors Γ— 6 sizes make 30 variants. Add "Material" with 2 values and you have 60.

LimitValue (as of October 2026)
Options per productup to 3
Variants per productup to 2,048

The values come from the Shopify Help Center on variants. Many YouTube videos and forum posts still cite 100 variants as the maximum. That used to be the case and is outdated. If your admin still won't allow "any more variants", it is usually because of an app that creates variants and has its own limits.

SKU and barcode: do you need them?

Both fields are optional. The SKU is your own item number, freely chosen, such as "HOOD-BLK-M". Still, give every variant a unique SKU: it helps with packing, CSV imports and matching in dropshipping and fulfillment apps. The Barcode field is meant for GTIN/EAN. You don't need one for your store, but you often do for Google Shopping and marketplaces with branded goods. In Germany, official numbers are issued by GS1 Germany.

How to create Shopify product variants step by step

  1. In the Shopify admin, open Products and click the product (or create a new one).
  2. In the Variants section, click Add options like size or color.
  3. Enter the name of the option. You can choose it freely, so "Flavor", "Scent" or "Format" also work. If the product category fits, Shopify suggests category metafields such as "Color" or "Size". You don't have to use them, but they have advantages (see swatches).
  4. Enter the values, each in its own field. Shopify automatically creates all combinations.
  5. Click Save.
  6. Now fill in the price, SKU, inventory and weight for each variant. Weight matters if you use weight-based shipping rates. If all variants cost the same, select them together and edit them in one go instead of opening each one individually.

Combinations that don't exist (such as "Navy / XXL") you simply delete as a variant. The others remain.

Editing many products at once

With 100 products and hundreds of variants, you don't want to click through everything. Two methods save time: the bulk editor (select products, then "Edit") for prices, SKUs and weights, and CSV export and import. For the latter, export a product that is already set up correctly and use the file as a template. That way you can see exactly how Shopify expects the columns for options and variants.

Shopify has no variant template that new products adopt automatically. If you sell lots of shoes with the same sizes, duplicate a fully set-up product (options and variants are copied along with it), or create the products via CSV. The link to the color metafield for swatches can also be set via CSV, using the "Option1 LinkedTo" column (CSV guide in the Help Center). Importing and duplicating step by step is shown in Adding, importing & publishing products in Shopify.

Variants not showing in your store?

  • Block missing: The "Variant picker" block was removed from the product template. Add it back in the theme editor. In some themes, the picker sits in a different block; the theme documentation tells you which one.
  • Different template: The product uses an alternative product template without a variant picker. Check the "Theme template" field in the product.
  • Only one variant: If there is only one value per option, many themes hide the picker.
  • Price jumps back: A dropshipping or POD app syncs prices and overwrites your change. Change the price in the app or turn off price syncing there.

Don't forget the unit price per variant

If you sell the same goods in different quantities, such as 250 g and 1 kg, you generally need a unit price (Grundpreis) in Germany (price per 1 kg, 1 l, 1 m, etc.). There are exceptions, among others for very small quantities and goods sold by the piece. For this, Shopify offers the Unit price field in the pricing section of each variant, with total quantity and base unit (guide in the Help Center). What exactly applies is summarized by IHK KΓΆln on price indications (German). The other mandatory information on the product page is covered in the article Optimizing your Shopify product page.

Images per variant: what works and what doesn't

This is one of the most common questions about variants: "I can only add one image per color." That's right. According to the Help Center, Shopify allows exactly one media item per variant, and this image must already be in the product's media. Here's how to assign it:

  1. Upload all images of the product to the Media section.
  2. In the variant list, click the small image icon next to a variant.
  3. Select the matching image and save.

When the customer then selects "Navy", the gallery jumps to this image. What happens after that is up to your theme. Some themes, such as Dawn, have a setting to hide media of other variants. However, this only works cleanly for the one assigned image, not for complete image groups.

What image size for product images?

Shopify recommends square images of 2,048 Γ— 2,048 pixels. Up to 5,000 Γ— 5,000 pixels or 25 megapixels are allowed, at under 20 MB per file (Help Center). More important than the exact size is a consistent aspect ratio: if all main images have the same format, they appear the same size on collection pages. If an image is cropped, check the image ratio setting for the product card and gallery in the theme editor.

Several images per color

You want to show five images for "Navy" and five different ones for "White"? There are three ways to do this:

  • Theme with image groups: Some premium themes group images by variant, often via the alt text or the order. Check this in the theme documentation before you buy. What else to look out for when choosing a theme is covered in Choosing a Shopify theme.
  • App: There are apps for variant images in the Shopify App Store. Pay attention to loading time and whether the app is compatible with your theme.
  • Each color as a separate product: Then each color has its own gallery. More on this below.

A separate description per variant

Shopify doesn't provide a separate product description per variant like Amazon does. You can create variant metafields and connect them in compatible themes via the theme editor, but whether and how they appear when the variant changes depends on the theme. Often you need theme code or an app for this. If variants differ so much that they need their own texts, they are usually really separate products.

Setting up color swatches

Color swatches instead of a dropdown look better and show at a glance which colors are available. Shopify handles this with category metafields (guide in the Help Center):

  1. In the product, choose a category that has a color metafield, for example Apparel > Tops > T-Shirts.
  2. In the variants section, click Add options like size or color and choose the category metafield "Color".
  3. Select the colors or create new entries. Each entry can get a color value or an image (such as a fabric sample).
  4. In the theme editor, set whether the swatches appear as circles or squares in the variant picker block.

The big advantage: the color entries apply across the whole store. If you rename "Black" to "Graphite", it changes for all products. You can connect existing color options to the metafield via the dynamic source icon. Caution: this clears the old values and they have to be reassigned. Try it on one product first.

Whether swatches also appear on collection pages (product cards) depends on the theme. Current Shopify themes often offer this as a product card setting. That way, customers can already see in the overview which colors a shirt is available in. How to build the overview pages themselves sensibly is explained in the article Collections and menus in Shopify.

Variant or separate product?

Many people ask themselves this: all colors in one product or each color separately? Both have pros and cons.

All colors as variantsEach color as a separate product
Maintenancelow, one text, one pagehigher, texts maintained twice
Images1 image per variant (without an app)full gallery per color
Collection page1 product cardeach color as its own card
Google1 strong pageseparate pages for searches like "green hoodie", but risk of very similar content
Reviewscombinedspread out (can be combined depending on the app)

Rule of thumb: if the variants only differ in size or color, use variants. If they differ in material, cut or target group, use separate products and link them to each other.

With the Combined Listings app, Shopify offers a middle way: individual products are shown on the product page like variants of a shared page (up to 60 products, up to 2,048 variants). However, the app is only available for Shopify Plus. For smaller stores, there are apps that link color products to each other as swatches.

More than three options and customer input

Three options aren't enough? Or the customer should type in a name and a back number for a jersey? Variants are the wrong tool for this. You need product options that are attached to the order as additional information (line item properties):

  • Product options apps: text fields, uploads, checkboxes, any number of options, some with surcharges. These options have no inventory of their own.
  • Personalization tools: If the customer should see the result live, such as the name on the shirt, a personalizer like Teeinblue is a better fit. It also creates the print file right away.
  • Theme code: You can also add a simple text field to the product form with a bit of Liquid, without an app.

The rule: anything that needs its own inventory or its own SKU is a variant. Everything else is an option.

If someone orders three mugs with three different names, they add each mug to the cart individually with its name. Shopify then lists them as separate line items, and the name appears on each line item in the order, and with most themes already in the cart. How to set up personalization with preview, uploads and print files is shown in Selling personalized products with Shopify.

Variants in print on demand and dropshipping

If you import products via Printful, Gelato or a dropshipping app, the app creates the variants. A few typical pitfalls:

  • Too many colors: In the POD tool, only select the colors you really want to show. 15 colors with only one mockup look random. Which providers are suited to what is shown in our comparison Print on demand with Shopify.
  • Image doesn't change: Check whether each variant in Shopify has an image assigned. This is sometimes missing after import, especially for colors added later.
  • "Invalid HS code" error: The customs tariff number in the variant's shipping section has the wrong format. Correct it or remove it. You mainly need customs information for shipping outside the EU, see Setting up shipping in Shopify.
  • Variants show "sold out": Usually inventory tracking is on and stock is 0. The solution is in the article Shopify shows "Sold out".

Plus sizes often cost more at the provider. You can adjust the price per variant. Whether you pass on the extra cost or calculate a uniform price is a decision for your margin.

FAQ

How many variants can a product have in Shopify?

Up to 2,048 variants per product, spread across a maximum of three options such as color, size and material. The former limit of 100 variants no longer applies, even though older guides still mention it. If you need more than three options, use product options via an app. These additional options then have no inventory of their own.

Can I assign several images to one variant in Shopify?

Not by default. Each variant gets exactly one image from the product media. For several images per color, you need a theme that groups images by variant, a variant images app, or you create each color as a separate product. Before buying a theme, check its documentation to see whether it includes this feature.

Can I show the variant picker as a dropdown instead of buttons?

Yes, in most current themes. In the theme editor, open the product template and click the variant picker block. There you choose the type, for example dropdown or buttons. For color options connected to the category metafield, you can also set swatches as circles or squares. The setting applies to all products using this template.

How do I show in the overview how many colors a product is available in?

The easiest way is with swatches on the product card. Many current themes have a setting for this in the product grid section or on the product card. The requirement is usually that your color option is connected to the category metafield "Color". If your theme doesn't support this, a swatch app or a small code customization helps.

Can I show the inventory per variant?

Yes, if your theme has an inventory status block. In many themes, it updates as soon as the customer selects a different variant. The requirement is that inventory tracking is switched on for the variants. Only show real numbers, though. Invented scarcity such as "Only 3 left" with a full warehouse is misleading and can lead to a cease-and-desist letter (Abmahnung).

What happens if the size doesn't fit the customer?

They can withdraw within 14 days. An exchange for a different size is something you offer voluntarily. With print on demand, the return usually goes to you, not to the print provider, because many providers don't take back goods because of a wrongly chosen size. Check your provider's terms. A size chart on the product page, for example as a block or pop-up, reduces such returns. More in Returns in dropshipping.

Can I offer digital products in several formats as variants?

Yes, for example a poster as a PDF in 30 Γ— 40 and 40 Γ— 50 cm at different prices. Create the formats as variants; this works with any theme. In the free "Digital Products" app, you attach separate files to each variant, according to the Help Center up to 50 files with a total of up to 5 GB per variant. Switch off shipping and inventory tracking for these variants.

Can I rename variants, for example to "Flavor"?

Yes. You type in the name of an option freely when creating it; Shopify only suggests standard names. "Flavor", "Scent" or "Format" are no problem. You rename existing options in the variants section by clicking on the option. You change the values below it the same way. Past orders are not affected.
