From Dropshipping to Your Own Brand: A Step-by-Step Guide
In short: Going from dropshipping to your own brand works best in stages: first your own branding on existing goods, then a proven product as a private label in a small batch with stock in the EU, later your own developments. Only start once a product sells consistently and you know your numbers. Legally, putting your name on the product makes you the manufacturer, with all the product safety obligations that come with it.
Dropshipping is a quick way in, but rarely a lasting business: anyone can sell the same product, delivery times are long and margins shrink. This article shows you step by step how to move from dropshipping to your own brand without betting everything on one card. It covers the costs of trademark protection, the legal obligations in Germany and the answer to whether you can mix dropshipping, print on demand and your own products in one store. The article is part of the overview Products & product range in Shopify.
Why build your own brand?
With generic dropshipping goods, you compete almost entirely on price and advertising. As soon as a product takes off, other stores copy it, often with the same images from the same supplier. Your own brand changes that:
- Not interchangeable: A product with your logo, your packaging and perhaps your own improvement is only available from you.
- Better margin: With larger order quantities, the unit price drops, and you can justify a higher price.
- Control: You decide on quality, delivery time and packaging yourself. With stock in Germany or the EU, you deliver within a few days.
- Repeat purchases: Customers remember a brand, not an anonymous store. Over time, this can lower your advertising cost per order.
The price for this: you need capital for goods you pay for in advance, and you carry the risk of being left with unsold stock. How much you should realistically plan for is covered in How much starting capital do I need?.
The four stages from dropshipping to your own brand
You don't have to hire a factory overnight. A gradual transition makes sense.
| Stage | What changes | Capital needed | Your legal role |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0: Classic dropshipping | Generic goods, shipped directly by the supplier | low | Distributor |
| 1: Branded dropshipping | Your own packaging, inserts, invoice with your name; the goods stay the same | low to medium | Distributor |
| 2: Private label | Proven product with your logo and packaging in a small batch, stock in the EU | medium: minimum quantity × unit price plus freight and customs | Manufacturer (your name on the product) |
| 3: Your own product | Your own improvements or a new development with a producer | high: development, samples, tooling, larger quantities | Manufacturer |
You can implement stage 1 right away. How this works with packaging, invoices and inserts is covered in Dropshipping with your own branding. A shortcut to your own product range without stock is print on demand and product personalization: you create your own designs, and production only starts after the order. More on this in Print on demand with Shopify.
When is the right time?
There is no fixed revenue threshold. These signs suggest you are ready:
- A product has been selling consistently for several months, not just during one hype week.
- You know your numbers: contribution margin, advertising cost per order, return rate. If not, work them out first with Calculating prices in an online store.
- Reviews and return reasons show you what could be better about the product.
- Customers buy again or ask for matching products.
- You can pay for the first order quantity without a failure ruining the store.
The transition step by step
1. Analyze your data
Read all the reviews and return reasons for your best product, including those of competitors and on Amazon. Note what bothers customers: material, size, instructions, packaging. That is your list for improvement and at the same time your sales argument.
2. Check and protect your brand name
Check whether the name is available: in the DPMAregister, in the EU database, on Google and on Amazon. Then register the trademark before you invest in packaging and advertising.
| Trademark | Valid in | Official fee for online filing |
|---|---|---|
| German trademark (DPMA) | Germany | €290 for up to 3 classes, €100 for each additional class |
| EU trademark (EUIPO) | all EU member states | €850 for 1 class, €50 for the 2nd class, €150 each from the 3rd class |
The figures come from the DPMA fee page (German) and the fact sheet from IHK Cologne on the EU trademark (German). Check the EUIPO fees directly with the office before filing. There may also be costs for a trademark search or legal advice. Tips on finding a name are in Finding a store name & logo.
3. Find a manufacturer and order samples
Your current dropshipping supplier is usually only a distributor, not a manufacturer. For private label, you need the producer or a wholesaler that offers branding. Ways to get there:
- Wholesale platforms like Alibaba: filter for verified manufacturers and ask about the minimum order quantity (MOQ), branding options and certificates.
- Manufacturers in the EU: higher unit prices, but shorter routes, no import duties within the EU and easier communication.
- Sourcing agents: for a commission, they handle searching, negotiating and quality control on site. Get references and don't pay everything in advance.
Always order samples from several manufacturers and compare them. Agree in writing on what makes up "your" product: material, dimensions, logo, packaging, test reports.
Special case: a product that doesn't exist yet
For a genuinely new development (stage 3), the path is longer: sketch the idea, have a prototype made, for example by 3D printing or with a product designer, then look for a manufacturer that produces to your specifications (OEM). Before you send drawings, have a non-disclosure agreement signed. A trademark only protects the name, not the product. You protect the appearance as a registered design with the DPMA (German), and technical solutions only via a patent or utility model. Expect development, samples and tooling to take considerably more time and money than private label.
4. A small first batch and logistics
Start by ordering the smallest quantity that makes economic sense. Calculate the total price up to your warehouse: goods, freight, customs, import VAT. For shipping, you have two options:
- Ship yourself: cheap at the beginning, but takes time and space.
- Fulfillment service providers such as byrd: storage, packing and shipping for a fee, with a Shopify integration.
5. Rebuild your store and presence around the brand
With your own goods, you may and should produce your own images and videos. Explain on the product page what makes your product better, and collect reviews from the start. Replace the old dropshipping version in your store as soon as the new goods are available, instead of selling both in parallel. You create your own goods as a normal Shopify product, with inventory tracking and stock at your warehouse location; see Adding, importing & publishing products in Shopify. How a product page should be structured is covered in The perfect Shopify product page.
Your new obligations as a manufacturer
As soon as you offer a product under your name or brand, you count as the manufacturer under the EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), even if a factory in China produces it. This means you take on obligations you didn't have as a pure distributor:
- Product safety: You must ensure the product is safe, carry out a risk assessment and keep technical documentation available.
- Labeling: Name or brand, postal address and electronic contact address belong on the product or packaging, along with a type or batch number. Your store must show the same manufacturer information, a product image and warnings.
- CE marking: For product groups such as electrical devices or toys, you need a conformity assessment and an EU declaration of conformity.
- Electrical devices: Registration with stiftung ear (German) before your first sale.
- Cosmetics: Specific obligations under the EU Cosmetics Regulation, including a safety assessment and notification before placing on the market. This also applies to homemade lip balms from your own kitchen.
- Food: If you make and sell sauces, spice blends or baked goods, you must register beforehand with the responsible food control authority (Art. 6 Regulation (EC) 852/2004) and comply with labeling rules. Which other product groups have special rules is covered in Prohibited & regulated products.
- Warranty and durability guarantee: You need the legal guarantee label under Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 as a seller anyway. If, as the manufacturer, you give a free durability guarantee of more than two years, the GARAN label is added. Our app EU Warranty Label GARAN shows the notice with the official template and QR code on the product page, and in the Pro version also GARAN labels per product. Alternatively, you add the official template to your theme yourself.
- Packaging: Registration in the LUCID packaging register and, for sales and shipping packaging to private customers, participation in a dual system (duales System).
- Import: If you bring in the goods yourself from a non-EU country, you are also the importer, with your own labeling obligations and responsibility for the customs declaration.
Sources: Regulation (EU) 2023/988 (GPSR) and the IHK Berlin fact sheet on product law in online retail (German). The other obligations for your store are summarized in Protecting your Shopify store from cease-and-desist letters.
Mixing dropshipping, print on demand and your own products
Yes, that works in one Shopify store. Shopify itself doesn't produce goods. Your own stocked products, dropshipping items and print-on-demand products run through different apps or locations, but in the same store and checkout.
What you need to watch out for:
- Multiple parcels: If someone orders one of your own products and a print-on-demand shirt, two parcels arrive at different times. Say so openly on the product page and in your shipping information.
- Shipping costs: With shipping profiles in Shopify, you can set different shipping costs for different product groups.
- Brand presence: Generic dropshipping goods next to your own brand dilute the impression. Keep only what fits the brand.
- Personalization: Personalization apps like Teeinblue can be combined with print-on-demand providers or your own production. Check which fulfillment routes the app supports and whether there are costs per order. How personalization works technically and legally is shown in Selling personalized products with Shopify.
By the way, personalized products have a special feature regarding the right of withdrawal: for goods made to customer specifications, withdrawal is excluded under § 312g (2) No. 1 BGB (German Civil Code). This can lower the return rate significantly, but must be stated correctly in your withdrawal policy (Widerrufsbelehrung).
FAQ
Should I start with dropshipping or go straight to my own products?
If you already have your own product or handmade goods, start with them directly. Shopify doesn't require dropshipping. If you are still looking for a product, dropshipping is a cheap way to test demand before you put money into stock. Your own production pays off as soon as a product demonstrably sells. With print on demand, you get your own designs without stock, but with a tight margin.
What if other stores copy my product?
You can't prevent it completely. A registered trademark protects the name and logo, a registered design the appearance of your product. Neither helps against a generic product from the same manufacturer. That's why the improvement from step 1 pays off: anyone who simply leaves out your logo then sells a worse product. On top of that come reviews, your own content and regular customers, which can't be copied.
Do I need a separate company or trade registration for each niche?
No. One trade registration can cover several stores and product areas as long as the activity description at registration fits, for example "Online-Handel mit Waren aller Art" (online retail of goods of all kinds). If your activity changes significantly, you amend the registration. A trademark protects the name; it is not a separate company. More on this in the article on trade registration for online stores.
How much money do I need for my first own production run?
That depends almost entirely on the minimum order quantity and unit price. Calculate: samples, minimum quantity times unit price, branding and packaging, freight, customs and import VAT, test reports and trademark registration. On top of that comes money for advertising until the goods are sold. Negotiate a smaller quantity for the first order, even if the unit price is higher.
What is an EPR number and do I need one?
EPR stands for extended producer responsibility. It refers to registration numbers for packaging, electrical devices or batteries. In Germany, examples are the LUCID registration number for packaging and the WEEE registration number from stiftung ear for electrical devices. Marketplaces often ask for them. For packaging, you practically always need one as soon as you ship yourself.
Do I have to register a trademark to have my own brand?
No, you may sell without a registered trademark. Without registration, however, it is hard to defend yourself if someone copies your name, and you risk infringing an older trademark yourself. So register the trademark before you put larger sums into packaging, logo and advertising. For Germany, this costs €290 online at the DPMA.
Can I sell products I make myself on Shopify?
Yes, Shopify is made exactly for that. You create the products, manage inventory and ship yourself or through a fulfillment service provider. Keep the manufacturer obligations in mind: product safety, labeling, packaging register and, for certain products such as cosmetics, food or toys, special regulations.
Where do I get EAN codes for my products?
In Germany, official EAN or GTIN numbers are issued by GS1 Germany for an annual fee. You don't need an EAN for your own store. For Amazon, other marketplaces and Google Shopping, however, they are often required for branded products. Don't buy cheap EANs from third-party sellers; marketplaces check that they are assigned to the brand owner.
