Shopify POS & Multichannel in Germany: Store, Amazon, eBay, Instagram
In short: In Shopify, you connect additional ways of selling as sales channels: Shopify POS for your store or market stall, Marketplace Connect for Amazon and eBay, the "Facebook & Instagram" app for social shopping. All channels share products and inventory. For a brick-and-mortar store in Germany, Shopify POS alone isn't enough: you also need a TSE solution under the German Cash Register Security Ordinance (Kassensicherungsverordnung). The Facebook and Instagram channel is free, marketplaces charge commission, and for Kaufland or many channels at once, an inventory management system (Warenwirtschaft) is usually the better choice.
This article is for you if you want to sell not only through your online store but also in a physical store, at markets, on Amazon, eBay or on Instagram. You'll learn how Shopify POS works in Germany, what it costs, which cash register obligations apply and how to connect marketplaces without selling the same item twice. You'll find more ways to get sales in the hub Shopify marketing: how to get your first sales.
What sales channels are in Shopify
In Shopify, a sales channel is any place where you sell. Your online store is one of them. You add others as apps, for example Point of Sale, Facebook & Instagram, Google & YouTube, TikTok or Marketplace Connect. In each product, you define which channels it appears on. Orders from all channels land in the same order overview, and inventory is counted down jointly.
Important for beginners: you don't need any of these channels to get started. If you run dropshipping or don't have a physical store, you don't need POS. An online store is enough.
Shopify POS in Germany: costs and hardware
Shopify POS is Shopify's point-of-sale app for iPhone, iPad and Android devices. According to the Shopify pricing page, there are two tiers:
| Included in every plan | POS Pro (add-on) | |
|---|---|---|
| Intended for | Occasional in-person selling, markets, pop-ups | Permanent store, multiple locations |
| Cost | Included in your Shopify plan | $89 per location per month, billed annually (USD view of the pricing page, as of October 2026) |
| Staff | Limited access | Unlimited, with roles and permissions |
| Returns | At the original place of purchase | At any location, with exchanges |
| Extras | Basic customer profiles | Inventory management and reports, buy online and pick up in store, "endless aisle" |
In-person card payments have their own fees, which vary by plan. You only see the current euro price of POS Pro and the card fees on the pricing page with a German location. Check them there before you calculate. What Shopify costs overall is covered in the article Shopify costs 2026.
For hardware, you need at least a smartphone or tablet and a Shopify card reader. Optional extras are a barcode scanner, receipt printer, cash drawer and tablet stand. Which devices work with your setup you can check with Shopify's hardware compatibility check. Whether card payments directly on a smartphone without a card reader are available for your store depends on the country and device. At the start, it's better to rely on a card reader.
Cash register obligations: TSE, receipts, registration
This is where Germany differs significantly from US tutorials. In its country-specific requirements, Shopify states that all merchants in Germany must comply with the Cash Register Security Ordinance (KassenSichV), and refers to a TSE solution for this. So the POS app alone isn't enough. What this means for you:
- TSE: Every transaction in an electronic cash register system must be signed by a certified technical security device (technische Sicherheitseinrichtung, TSE). With Shopify POS, this works through an app. One example is OpenFiskal, which signs sales, refunds and exchanges, prints TSE QR codes on receipts and provides the DSFinV-K export for audits. According to its listing, it costs €19.99 per register per month, or €14.99 with annual payment (billed in USD).
- Receipts: You must issue a receipt for every sale, on paper or digitally.
- Registration with the tax office: You must register electronic cash register systems with a TSE with the tax office (§ 146a(4) AO). Since 01/01/2025, this is done electronically via Mein ELSTER or the ERiC interface. According to IHK Nord Westfalen (German), registers you acquire from 07/01/2025 onward must be registered within one month of acquisition; taking a register out of service must also be reported.
- Receipts with VAT: According to Shopify, printed receipts in Germany show a VAT summary by default, which can't be turned off.
How online and in-store sales end up together in your accounting is explained in the article Invoices and accounting in your Shopify store.
Keeping your physical store and online store in sync
The biggest advantage of Shopify POS: your physical store and online store use the same products and the same inventory. When you sell in the store, inventory drops automatically, online too. For this, you create locations, such as "Store Dresden" and "Warehouse", and maintain inventory per location. Set which locations fulfill online orders. Otherwise, the store shows goods as sold out that are sitting in the warehouse. The details are in the article Shopify shows "Sold out".
For markets and trade fairs, you can create a separate location that you stock beforehand with the goods you take along. Large items that you sell in the store but don't hand over on the spot are booked as a sale with delivery. The order then appears like an online order to be shipped.
If you have an existing store with a different cash register system and want to switch to Shopify, plan the switch as a project: import products and inventory, carry over barcodes, set up the TSE, train staff, and only switch over on a quiet day.
Connecting Amazon, eBay, Kaufland
Yes, you can sell the same products in your own store and on marketplaces at the same time. Shopify's own app for this is Marketplace Connect. According to its listing, it supports Amazon, eBay, Walmart and Target Plus. The first 50 synced marketplace orders per month are free; after that, 1% per order applies, up to a maximum of $99 per month. Check in the app whether the country sites relevant to you, such as amazon.de and ebay.de, are covered.
Kaufland isn't on this list. For it, you need a separate integration or an inventory management system that connects to Kaufland. Before you add marketplaces, do the math honestly:
- Commissions: Marketplaces charge selling fees per item, which depending on the category are significantly higher than your Shopify payment fees. Factor them into your price calculation.
- Obligations per channel: You must correctly provide your imprint (Impressum), withdrawal policy (Widerrufsbelehrung), unit prices and GPSR information on every marketplace.
- Overselling: Syncs don't always run in real time. With one-off items or low stock, an item can be sold twice. Keep a safety stock in reserve.
- Product data: Marketplaces often require GTIN/EAN, specific categories and attributes that your store doesn't need.
Etsy is a separate case for handmade goods and print on demand. Why it's even better than your own store for some merchants is explained in the article Shopify or Etsy, WooCommerce, Wix.
Do you need an inventory management system?
Shopify has products, inventory, locations, orders and customers. For a store with one physical location or one additional marketplace, that's enough. But Shopify isn't a full-fledged inventory management system (Warenwirtschaft, or "Wawi" for short) with purchasing, supplier orders, storage bins, accounting and many channels.
From three or more channels, several warehouses or many items, an inventory management system or a multichannel tool that controls Shopify, marketplaces and shipping centrally is worthwhile. Widely used in the DACH region are, for example, JTL-Wawi, Billbee, Xentral and plentymarkets. Which channels and features are included in each plan varies greatly. Above all, check the Shopify integration and the marketplaces you really need. The inventory management system is then the leading system, and Shopify one of several channels.
Facebook and Instagram shop
With the free "Facebook & Instagram" app, you sync your catalog to Meta. According to the Shopify Help Center, the channel is free on all Shopify plans, provided your store meets the requirements. Instagram charges no fee for the shop itself. Only ads cost money, if you run them.
Since August 26, 2025, customers are always redirected to your Shopify store to pay. So checkout runs through your store, with your payment methods and legal texts. Requirements according to Shopify: your business is based in a country supported by Meta, your products can be purchased directly on your verified domain, and they comply with Meta's commerce policies. Meta reviews the products and can reject individual ones. The pixel and Conversions API for advertising also run through the same channel. How to set up your first campaign is covered in the article Facebook ads for Shopify.
Shopify isn't the only platform with an Instagram integration, but it's one of the most deeply integrated. Similar channels exist for Google and TikTok. See Google Shopping with Shopify and Connecting TikTok Shop to Shopify.
The order in which to build your channels
More channels don't automatically mean more revenue, but they certainly mean more maintenance. A sensible order for most stores:
- Get your online store running properly: legal texts, payments, shipping, product data.
- Free channels with little effort: Google & YouTube and Facebook & Instagram, because they use the same catalog.
- Shopify POS, if you sell in person anyway. Only with a TSE solution.
- One marketplace, if your margin can carry the commission and you see demand there.
- Inventory management system, as soon as you have three or more channels or several warehouses.
FAQ
Do I need Shopify POS for dropshipping?
No. Shopify POS is only meant for in-person sales, i.e. in a store, at markets or at events. For a pure online store or dropshipping, you don't need it. The basic features are included in every plan, but you don't have to install or use the app. If you set up a pop-up stand later, you can add POS at any time.
Can I connect a barcode scanner to Shopify POS?
Yes, barcode scanners are among the supported accessories for Shopify POS. Whether a specific model works depends on the device running the POS app and on the connection type. Check it with Shopify's hardware compatibility check before you buy. For scanning to work, your products need barcodes in the product or variant field.
Does an Instagram shop cost fees?
According to Shopify, the "Facebook & Instagram" sales channel is free on all plans. Because customers have always been redirected to your Shopify store to pay since August 2025, only your normal payment fees apply. Costs arise when you run ads on Facebook or Instagram. Meta doesn't take a commission on your store sales.
How do I sync my physical store and online store so inventory is correct?
Use Shopify POS as the cash register in your store. Then your physical store and online store work with the same product catalog and the same inventory, and every sale counts down inventory at the respective location. To do this, create locations, maintain inventory per location and set which locations fulfill online orders. With a third-party cash register, you need an integration or an inventory management system.
Is there an inventory management system for Shopify?
Shopify comes with inventory, location and order management, but not a complete inventory management system with purchasing and supplier management. For many channels or warehouses, you connect Shopify to a system such as JTL-Wawi, Billbee, Xentral or plentymarkets. These then control inventory, marketplaces and shipping centrally, and Shopify becomes one of several channels.
Can I sell with Shopify POS without a TSE?
Not in Germany. Shopify itself points out that merchants must comply with the Cash Register Security Ordinance. Electronic cash register systems need a certified TSE, which for Shopify POS comes via a fiscalization app. On top of that come the obligation to issue receipts and registering the register with the tax office. Clarify the setup with your tax advisor before your first sale.
