Shopify Alternatives: Etsy, WooCommerce or Wix – Which Fits You?
In short: Etsy is the easiest place to start with handmade goods, print on demand and digital products, because Etsy brings the buyers, but it takes a cut of every sale. Shopify pays off if you want to build your own brand and bring in visitors yourself (social media, ads, SEO). WooCommerce only looks free and suits you if you know WordPress or have someone who handles the tech and updates. Wix works best when the website is the main thing and the shop is an add-on.
Looking for Shopify alternatives, or want to know whether Etsy, WooCommerce or Wix is a better fit for you? Here is an honest comparison from a German perspective: costs in euros, a worked fee example, legal compliance, effort and a clear decision guide. If you decide on Shopify, continue with the overview Starting a Shopify store.

The real difference: marketplace or your own store
The most important question is not “which tool is better” but: Where do your buyers come from?
On Etsy, people actively search for products. A new listing can be found without advertising. In return, you pay on every sale, you compete right next to similar offers, and Etsy sets the rules. If Etsy raises its fees or suspends your shop, your business is gone.
Shopify, WooCommerce and Wix, by contrast, are empty stores on a side street. Nobody walks by by chance. You need a source of visitors: TikTok, Instagram, Google, ads, email. In return, everything belongs to you: brand, design, customer list, prices. How to get your first visitors without an ad budget is shown in First sales without an ad budget.
Worked example: what do Etsy and Shopify cost at €500 and €2,000 in sales?
Assumptions: order value €25 including shipping, payment by card, no advertising, no apps. For Etsy, we calculate with a 6.5% transaction fee, 4% + €0.30 payment processing and about €0.18 for the $0.20 listing fee, which is charged again with every sale. For Shopify, we use the Basic plan at approx. €36 per month and card fees of approx. 2.1% + €0.30 via Shopify Payments. Both Shopify figures are euro amounts from secondary sources, so they are approximations.
| Monthly sales | Etsy | Shopify Basic |
|---|---|---|
| €500 (20 orders) | approx. €62 (approx. 12.4%) | approx. €53 (€36 + 20 × €0.83) |
| €2,000 (80 orders) | approx. €248 | approx. €102 (€36 + 80 × €0.83) |
| Not included | One-time setup fee, Offsite Ads fee (12–15% on sales made through them), possibly regulatory fees, currency conversion | Apps, premium theme, domain, PayPal fees, advertising costs for visitors |
What the numbers show: Etsy fees grow with every euro of revenue, while Shopify has a fixed base and lower fees per sale. The more you sell, the more the difference matters. But: the Shopify calculation is missing the biggest item, namely the money or time it takes to bring visitors to the store. On Etsy, that reach is included in the fee. If you spend an extra €200 on advertising at €500 in sales on Shopify, Etsy comes out cheaper.
Important about Etsy Offsite Ads: Etsy advertises your products on other sites and charges 15% on sales made through them, or 12% from $10,000 in annual sales (maximum $100 per order). Below that sales threshold you can opt out; above it you can’t. How to set your prices so that something is left after all fees is explained in Calculating prices for your online store.
WooCommerce: really free?
The plugin itself costs nothing. A working, legally compliant store in Germany still costs money and, above all, time:
- Hosting: A store needs more than a €1 web package. For a stable WooCommerce store, many budget for hosting in the mid single-digit to double-digit euro range per month, depending on provider and traffic.
- German legal adjustments: WooCommerce is built for an international market. For unit prices, delivery times, tax notices, the order button rule (Button-Lösung) and the withdrawal button, many use Germanized (basic version free, Pro version paid) or German Market.
- Theme and plugins: Good themes and extensions for shipping, invoices or reviews are often paid, usually as an annual license.
- Maintenance and security: WordPress, WooCommerce and plugins need regular updates. If an update breaks something or a security hole is exploited, it’s on you. With Shopify, the provider takes care of hosting, security and system updates.
WooCommerce is the right choice if you know WordPress well, want to combine a lot of content (blog, guides) with your store, or need features Shopify doesn’t offer. For beginners without technical experience, it’s usually the more expensive choice, just not on the invoice but in time. Dropshipping and product personalization also work with WooCommerce, by the way, but through additional plugins you choose and maintain yourself. Shopify has a bigger selection of ready-made apps; what that looks like for customized products is shown in Selling personalized products with Shopify.
Wix: website builder with a shop
Wix is strong when the website is the focus: photographers, coaches, restaurants, tradespeople who sell a few products or gift cards on the side. The editor is very free-form; you can place elements pixel-perfectly. That is exactly what can become a drawback for a store, because freely placed layouts quickly look messy on a phone.
For a pure online store with a growing range, Shopify is usually the better foundation: a larger app selection, more payment and shipping integrations, more merchant-specific features. Both rank on Google, by the way. What matters is content, load time and structure, not the builder. How that works on Shopify is covered in Shopify SEO.
And Jimdo, Ecwid, Hostinger, GoDaddy or Gumroad?
Most other names fit into the groups above. Website builders with shop features such as Jimdo, the builder from Hostinger or the one from GoDaddy play in the same league as Wix: good for a website with a small range, weaker on apps and integrations. Hostinger is also a classic hosting provider, which usually means running WordPress with WooCommerce on it. Ecwid is a shop module you embed in an existing website. Platforms like Gumroad specialize in digital products. The same test applies to all of them: Are there German payment methods, legal-text solutions and shipping integrations, and can you export your data later?
Legal compliance in Germany: this applies everywhere
A misconception from many comments: “I don’t need legal texts on Etsy.” Wrong. If you sell commercially in Germany, you need an imprint (Impressum), cancellation policy (Widerrufsbelehrung), privacy policy (Datenschutzerklärung) and correct price information on every platform. Since 2026, the electronic withdrawal button (Widerrufsbutton) and the legal guarantee notice (Gewährleistungshinweis) have been added. The only difference is how well the platform supports you:
- Shopify: You add the legal texts yourself; for German obligations such as the withdrawal button or the legal guarantee notice there are apps, for example our apps EU Withdrawal Form & Button and EU Warranty Label GARAN. Alternatives are other apps from the App Store or solutions from legal-text providers.
- Etsy: Has fields for the imprint and policies, but you are responsible for the content and its accuracy.
- WooCommerce: Well covered with Germanized or German Market, but you have to set it up and keep it current yourself.
- Wix: Add legal texts yourself, check special German obligations case by case.
All obligations in detail are in Protecting your Shopify store from cease-and-desist letters; most of it applies to any platform.
What about Amazon or eBay?
For many products, Amazon is where customers search first. As a sales channel it can make sense, but Amazon is even more of someone else’s playing field than Etsy: tough price competition, strict rules, hardly any brand loyalty. Your own store is not a replacement for it but a complement.
You can connect both. Shopify’s free app Marketplace Connect syncs products and orders with Amazon, eBay, Walmart and Target Plus. According to the App Store page, the first 50 synced orders per month are free; after that it’s 1% per order, capped at $99 per month. Etsy is not included in this app; there are third-party apps for that.
Moving to Shopify: switching from WooCommerce, Wix or Etsy
Switching is not starting from zero. In its Help Center, Shopify lists its own migration guides for WooCommerce, Wix, Etsy, eBay, Squarespace, Square and GoDaddy, among others. You can transfer products, customers, past orders, discount codes, blog posts and pages. Products, customers and pages go via CSV file; for orders and discount codes you need a migration app or a developer. Many migration apps in the App Store are paid or charge by data volume; a CSV export from WooCommerce and import into Shopify only costs time.
Here’s how to proceed:
- Keep the order: first products, then customers, then past orders. That way Shopify assigns the orders to the right products and customers.
- Check notifications: According to Shopify, staff with order notifications enabled receive an email for every imported order. With thousands of orders, turn this off beforehand.
- Set up redirects before you switch the domain: Shopify uses its own URL structure, so old links would otherwise lead nowhere. Without redirects you lose Google rankings and external links.
- Match features: List the plugins you use today (invoices, shipping, legal texts, reviews) and find the replacement in Shopify beforehand.
The old store keeps running until the new one has been checked with a test order. With thousands of products, a parallel second store with part of the range usually isn’t worth it; double maintenance costs more than a well-planned complete move. Whether to do it yourself or hand it off, Hire a Shopify expert or build it yourself? helps you decide. The reverse also applies: if you want to leave Shopify, you can export products, customers and orders as CSV.
Connecting Shopify to an existing website
You already have a website on WordPress, GoDaddy, Wix or a custom build and don’t want to rebuild everything? Then there are two clean ways:
- Buy Button: According to Shopify, the Buy Button sales channel is included in all plans. You add a code snippet to your website, customers pay through Shopify checkout, and changes in the admin are applied automatically. This works for a few products.
- Store on a subdomain: Your website stays as it is, and the Shopify store runs at, for example, shop.yourdomain.de. In the navigation, you link the two to each other. This is the better solution once your range grows. How to set up the subdomain is explained in Connecting a domain to Shopify.
A website with a Buy Button also needs the mandatory information of an online store, because the purchase starts there.
Decision guide: what fits you?
| Your situation | Our recommendation |
|---|---|
| Handmade, print on demand or digital products, no audience, small budget | Etsy for testing |
| You want to build a brand and have or plan a source of visitors (social media, ads) | Shopify |
| Dropshipping with ads | Shopify (Etsy doesn’t allow classic dropshipping of other people’s goods) |
| You know WordPress well, have a lot of content or need special features | WooCommerce |
| Website for a service, shop only as an add-on with a few products | Wix (or Shopify if the shop is meant to grow) |
| You already sell on Amazon and want your own brand | Shopify plus Marketplace Connect |
Specifically for print on demand: Etsy is easier to start with, because buyers there actively search for individual designs. Shopify is the better choice if you build a brand and sell via TikTok or Instagram. The right providers are compared in Print on demand with Shopify.
FAQ
Is Shopify better than WooCommerce?
For most beginners, yes, because Shopify takes care of hosting, security and updates so you can focus on selling. WooCommerce is more flexible and has no base platform fee, but it requires technical knowledge and ongoing maintenance. If you are already confident with WordPress or have a developer on hand, WooCommerce can be the better choice.
Does it cost money to open an Etsy shop?
According to its fees policy, Etsy may charge a one-time, non-refundable setup fee; the amount is shown when you sign up. There is no monthly fee. Instead, you pay $0.20 per listing, a 6.5% transaction fee on each sale and, for bank accounts in Germany, 4% + €0.30 for payment processing.
Can I connect my Etsy shop to Shopify?
Yes, via third-party apps from the Shopify App Store that sync products and inventory between the two. Shopify’s own Marketplace Connect app currently doesn’t support Etsy, only Amazon, eBay, Walmart and Target Plus. Alternatively, you can move completely from Etsy to Shopify; Shopify offers its own migration guide for this.
Isn’t it easier to sell directly on Amazon?
Getting started isn’t necessarily easier. Amazon brings many buyers, but also tough competition, its own fees and strict rules, and the customer relationship belongs to Amazon. For merchandise with high demand, Amazon can make sense. If you want to build your own brand, combine Amazon with your own store later.
Do I own the Shopify themes I bought if I close my store?
Premium themes are usually sold as a license for one store, not as a freely transferable file. If you close your store and open a new one, depending on the provider you have to buy the theme again or ask the provider for a transfer. This doesn’t affect free Shopify themes. Something similar applies to many premium WooCommerce themes with an annual license.
Do customers shop directly “on Shopify” like on Amazon?
No. Shopify is not a marketplace but the technology behind your own store. Customers reach you via your domain, social media, Google or ads and buy in your store, not on a Shopify page with many merchants. That’s why Shopify has no search across all stores. You bring the visitors yourself; that’s the most important difference from Etsy and Amazon.
Can I sell on Shopify, Etsy and eBay at the same time?
Yes, many merchants combine several channels. To avoid selling an item twice, you need shared inventory: for eBay and Amazon this works via Marketplace Connect, for Etsy via third-party apps. With print on demand this is less critical, because products are only made after the sale. Still, start with one channel and add more once your processes are running smoothly.
Can I buy a Shopify theme on Etsy?
Yes, Shopify themes and templates are sold on Etsy, often as a customized version of a free Shopify theme. You upload the file in your store’s theme section. The catch: such themes are not reviewed by Shopify, and updates and support depend on the seller. Themes from the official Theme Store are the safer choice, especially if you are planning long term.
