First Sales Without Ads: Win Customers for Your Online Store

In short: A new store has no visitors until you bring them there. Without an ad budget, you pay with time: short videos on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube Shorts, Pinterest, free Google product listings, communities and micro-influencers you send your product to. Expect weeks to months, not days. In Germany, creators who are paid or receive free products must clearly label their posts as advertising ("Werbung").

How do you get your first sales without ads and win customers for your online store? This question comes up again and again under Shopify tutorials. The honest answer first: it works, but not on the side. Here you will learn which free channels are realistic for a new store, how to win influencers and UGC creators without a budget, what the rules on ad labeling are in Germany and what a concrete 30-day plan looks like. This article is part of the overview Shopify marketing: how to get your first sales.

First sales without ads: what is realistic

Without a budget, first sales in the first few weeks are realistic, but predictable revenue is not. A freshly launched store is hardly found on Google and has no followers on social media. Nobody stumbles across it by chance. You have to actively bring in visitors, and without money that means: produce content, reach out to people, keep at it.

What you get in return is valuable: you learn which message works before you put money into ads. Videos that perform well organically are often the best ads later on. So organic content is not a replacement for advertising, but the cheapest test.

To be honest: organic is hard to scale. Once you know what works after a few months, a small ad budget is usually the next step. More on that later.

First: get your store ready to sell

Every visitor you win organically has been hard-earned. Don't waste them on a store that doesn't convince. Before you start, check:

  • Product page with real images, a clear benefit, and the price including shipping cost information.
  • Legal texts, imprint (Impressum), a way to contact you, common payment methods.
  • Trust: who is behind the store? Are there reviews? How to do this without fakes is covered in the article reviews, trust elements and social proof.
  • Have a stranger buy something in your store on their phone once and watch where they hesitate.

If visitors are already coming but nobody buys, the article visitors but no sales will help you.

Many beginners overlook the free Google listings, even though they are available in Germany and take hardly any work once set up. How it works is explained in the article Google Shopping with Shopify. For regular Google search, Shopify SEO is the long-term channel.

"Press" here means other people's reach: local newspapers, niche blogs, podcasts and gift guides before Christmas or Mother's Day are constantly looking for topics. Offer a short story (why does your product exist?), good photos and a sample.

Choose one, at most two channels to start with. Five channels done halfheartedly bring less than one done consistently.

Organic content: TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest, Shorts

For most stores, short videos are the channel with the greatest reach without a budget, because TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts also show videos to people who don't follow you. So you don't need a large follower count to be seen.

What to post

  • The product in use: unboxing, using it, showing the result.
  • The problem it solves: first the annoying situation, then the solution.
  • Behind the scenes: packing parcels, creating designs, showing mistakes. Small stores in particular come across as more genuine than big brands this way.
  • Replies to comments: every question under a video is a new video.

Faceless works. Hands, the product and a voiceover are enough in many niches. You don't have to tell your life story; the product's story is enough.

Content without the product in hand โ€“ and AI videos?

Honest answer: without the product it gets difficult. If you dropship and have nothing in hand, order samples. Without samples you can neither shoot your own videos nor judge the quality of what you sell. A sample usually costs less than a single day of advertising.

  • Supplier material: only use it with explicit permission. Downloading videos from competitors or viral accounts is not an option.
  • AI videos: fine as explainer graphics, animation or background. It becomes problematic when an AI person pretends to be a real customer with real experience. That can count as misleading advertising, and the product often looks different in the video than in reality, which leads to returns.

Which accounts to create

Create your social media accounts under your store's name, not under your private profile, and use the same name and logo everywhere so people recognize you. On Instagram, a Creator or Business account is enough; both are professional accounts with analytics. On TikTok you need a Business account for TikTok Shop; how that fits together is covered in the article connecting TikTok Shop with Shopify.

Error messages when connecting Instagram to Shopify ("not eligible for commerce", "already connected to another store") almost always have to do with the Meta business portfolio, not with Shopify. How to connect Instagram, Facebook and other sales channels properly is covered in the article Shopify POS & multichannel.

On rhythm: one simple video every day for four weeks is better than three elaborate ones. Afterwards, look at which videos performed above average and make more of those.

Pinterest works differently from TikTok: pins get found for months, similar to a search engine. For that you need a business account and vertical images with descriptive titles. The official Pinterest app for Shopify syncs your products as pins.

Winning influencers without a budget

Without a budget, micro-influencers with around 1,000 to 20,000 followers are your target, not big accounts. Small creators reply more often, often have a closer bond with their followers and more frequently work in exchange for product instead of money. For a first test of whether your niche responds to the product, that is ideal.

How to find and contact them

  1. Find: search TikTok and Instagram for hashtags in your niche and note creators who post regularly and get real comments, not just emojis.
  2. Check: does the audience fit? Has the account done collaborations before, and are they labeled? That shows the creator knows what they are doing.
  3. Reach out: by direct message or the email address in their profile. Short, personal, no mass message.
  4. Offer without obligation: send the product, no obligation to post. That lowers the barrier and comes across as fair.
  5. Follow up: send one friendly reminder after a week, then stop.

Expect many not to reply at all. So contact 20 to 30 suitable creators rather than five big ones. No email in the profile? Then use a direct message, and on YouTube the email is often listed on the channel under "More" or in the channel info.

Hi [name], I've been following your videos on [topic], and I especially liked [specific video]. I run a small store for [product] and would love to send you one for free, with no obligation. If you like it and want to show it, I'd be happy. Would you send me your address? Best wishes, [name] from [store]

Give every creator their own discount code. That way you can see in Shopify which post brought in orders. How to create codes is explained in the article discount codes, bundles and upsells in Shopify.

Sending PR packages

A free package has no customer order. So that inventory, shipping labels and bookkeeping still add up, you can create a draft order in Shopify, apply a 100% discount and ship it as usual. For tax purposes, products you send in exchange for a post are not a private gift. Ask your tax advisor how to book them.

Affiliate: creators on commission instead of a fixed fee

With an affiliate model, you only pay creators when a purchase is actually made through their link or code. For stores without a budget this is attractive, because no sale also means no cost. Small creators don't like working on pure commission, though; free product plus commission works best.

  • Simplest solution without an app: a separate discount code per creator. In Shopify you can see how often it was used, and you pay out the commission at the end of the month. For creators, a code is often more convenient than a long link.
  • With an app: with Shopify Collabs, Shopify offers its own app for creator applications, personal links and codes, product gifting and automatic commission payouts (according to the listing, a 2.9% processing fee may apply to automatic payouts). The listing is only available in English with prices in US dollars. Whether all features are available for your German store, you will see during installation. The Shopify App Store has other affiliate apps with tiered commissions.

How high can the commission be? It has to come out of your contribution margin. If you are left with around โ‚ฌ16.89 before advertising at a selling price of โ‚ฌ39.90 (calculation in the article on Facebook Ads), a 20% commission costs just under โ‚ฌ8 and still leaves a profit. 50% would be around โ‚ฌ20 per sale, and you would lose money on every order. High commissions only work for digital products or very high margins. Have creators invoice you for payouts and clarify the bookkeeping with your tax advisor.

Selling other people's products as an affiliate in your own Shopify store?

Technically this works through theme customizations or apps whose button leads to Amazon or another retailer. Economically it rarely makes sense: you pay Shopify monthly, earn only a few percent commission and have neither the checkout nor the customer data. For pure affiliate sites, a blog or a comparison portal is usually the better tool. There too: affiliate links are advertising and must be recognizable as such.

UGC: content from real people

UGC (user-generated content) means photos and videos from customers or creators that show the product from their perspective, often straight into the phone camera. There are two kinds:

  • Customer UGC: reviews with photos, posts in which your store is tagged. Ask buyers for it by email after delivery. Free, but slow.
  • Paid or bartered UGC: creators produce videos for you that you use on your own channels or later in ads. The creator doesn't need any reach for this.

Ad labeling in Germany

If a creator receives money, a free product or any other consideration for a post, they must label it as advertising. The legal basis includes ยง 5a (4) of the German Act against Unfair Competition (UWG). According to the Verbraucherzentrale (German), for influencers the receipt of consideration is even presumed by law. A free product counts as consideration.

  • Terms: "Werbung" or "Anzeige" (German for "advertising" and "advertisement"). According to the guidelines of the German media authorities (Medienanstalten) (German), abbreviations such as "ad" and English phrases such as "sponsored by" or "PR sample" are not sufficient.
  • Placement: at the start of the post and on every story slide, recognizable at first glance, not hidden among hashtags.
  • Discount codes and affiliate links: must also be recognizable as advertising.

For you as a merchant, this means: explicitly ask every creator to label the post and record this in writing. If the label is missing, the commissioning company can also receive a cease-and-desist letter (Abmahnung). Your own posts on the store account don't need a label, because it is clear that a store promotes its products.

The 30-day plan

PeriodTasks
Days 1โ€“3Have strangers test the store, fix errors. Set up the Google & YouTube app. Create social media accounts with your store name and put the store link in the profile.
Days 4โ€“7Inform your personal network and ask for honest feedback. Shoot your first 5 videos (product in use, problem-solution, unboxing).
Days 8โ€“14Post one video daily. Research 20 suitable micro-influencers and contact 10. Join discussions helpfully in 2โ€“3 communities in your niche, without advertising.
Days 15โ€“21Keep posting daily. Send packages to creators who agreed, with their own discount code and a note about labeling. Ask first customers for a review with a photo.
Days 22โ€“30Evaluate: which videos had above-average views and clicks? Which code was used? Do more of what works, drop the rest. Set up newsletter sign-up in the store.

People who have bought once are more likely to buy again, and an email to existing customers costs almost nothing. So build a list from the start, see email marketing in Shopify.

When after a few weeks you have videos that perform well organically and your store is selling, that is the moment to test a small ad budget. How to do that is covered in the article Facebook Ads for Shopify.

FAQ

How do customers find my new online store without ads?

Hardly at all on their own. A new store is only found on Google after weeks to months and has no followers. You bring in the first visitors actively: through short videos on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube Shorts with a link to the store, through free Google product listings, through communities in your niche and through micro-influencers you send your product to. Without a budget, you invest time instead of money.

How long does it take to make the first sale without ads?

There is no reliable number, because it depends on the product, niche and your effort. If you post daily, contact creators and use your personal network, you often get your first orders within a few weeks. Building predictable revenue without advertising tends to take months. Nobody can tell you in advance how many sales per day are possible; only your own numbers after 30 days will show that.

Do I have to pay influencers?

Not necessarily. Many small creators with a few thousand followers feature products in exchange for a free item, especially if it fits their topic and you don't require them to post. Larger accounts usually expect money. Even with a free product, the creator must label the post as advertising in Germany, because the product counts as consideration.

Do I need Facebook to use Instagram for my store?

Not for organic posts, Reels and Stories on Instagram. A professional Instagram account also works without Facebook. But as soon as you want to sync products via the Shopify app "Facebook & Instagram", tag products in posts or run paid ads, you need a Facebook profile and a Facebook Page in Meta's business portfolio.

Should my social media accounts have the same name as my store?

Yes, if possible. The same name and logo on all channels make sure people recognize you and are more likely to trust your store. Check the name on TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube before launching the store. If it is taken, use a consistent variation, for example with "shop" or "official" at the end, the same on all platforms.

How do I send PR packages to influencers through Shopify?

Create a draft order in Shopify with the creator as the customer, apply a 100% discount and complete it. Inventory is then reduced correctly and you can ship the package with a label through your normal shipping process. Keep a note of which creator received what. How to treat the packages for tax purposes is best clarified with your tax advisor.

Why don't my social media icons appear in my store?

In most Shopify themes, you enter the links to your profiles in the theme settings under Social media. The icons then only appear in sections that support them, usually the footer. If the display of social media icons is turned off there, you won't see anything. How to customize the footer and sections is covered in the article on customizing your theme.
