One Product Store, Niche Store or General Store on Shopify?

In short: You don't have to build a separate store for every product. The one product store is a testing model from dropshipping that lives on advertising. For most beginners in Germany, a niche store is the better choice: one store for a clearly defined target group, started with a few products that you can maintain properly. A general store without a theme is almost always the weakest option. Every additional store costs you its own Shopify plan, its own legal texts and its own maintenance.

"Do I have to create a new store for every product?" This question comes up again and again under dropshipping videos, because new stores for single products are constantly being built there. Here's the honest answer: what a one product store can do, when a niche store is better, how many products you need to start, and what a second store really costs in Germany. This article is part of our overview Shopify products: finding, creating, selling.

One product store, niche store, general store: the three models compared

Behind all the terms are three basic models:

  • One product store: One store, one product (often with variants or accessories). The entire site tells the story of this one product.
  • Niche store: A store for one theme or target group, such as "accessories for cat owners in small apartments" or "linen home textiles". It starts with a few products and grows within the theme.
  • General store: Everything that looks good right now, in one store: fishing lures next to fairy lights next to cat toys.

The underestimated point about the general store is specific to Germany: every product needs its own manufacturer information under the GPSR (EU General Product Safety Regulation), warnings, CE documents where applicable, and a matching delivery time. Ten products from ten categories mean ten different supplier checks. In a niche, a lot repeats itself.

Why YouTubers build a new store for every product

Most videos show the one product store because it fits the testing model being sold there: find a product, build a store in a few hours, run ads, decide after a few days. If the product doesn't sell, the store is discarded and the next one is built. The store is a kind of disposable landing page.

There are two reasons for this. First, a page that shows only one product feels more focused, and the ad leads to the purchase without distraction. Second, it allows quick testing. What the videos rarely say: the model only works with an ad budget, and many tests fail. Whether it adds up with your numbers you can check with is dropshipping still worth it in 2026?. You also don't need a new store for product tests: you can test a product in your existing niche store and send the ad straight to the product page.

What each additional store costs in Germany

A Shopify subscription covers one store. You can manage several stores under one login, but each needs its own plan. According to the Shopify pricing page, free additional stores ("expansion stores", up to 9) are only available with Shopify Plus. On top of that comes everything that applies per store in Germany:

ItemPer additional store
Shopify planBasic about โ‚ฌ36 per month with monthly billing (as of October 2026, $39 in the USD view)
Domaina separate domain per store
Legal textsImprint (Impressum), terms and conditions (AGB), cancellation policy, privacy policy for each store; many providers charge per store or package
Withdrawal button, legal guarantee labelset up in every store
Appssubscriptions run per store
Paymentsset up Shopify Payments and PayPal per store
Maintenanceupdates, legal changes, customer service per store

What you don't need twice: the trade registration (Gewerbeanmeldung; it applies to your business activity, not to the individual store) and registration in the German packaging register LUCID, where you do, however, list all brand names you sell under. How a store's fixed costs add up is worked out in Shopify costs 2026. So three one product stores can quickly cost you three times the fixed costs before you've sold a single product.

How many products to start with?

"20 or 200?" is the wrong question. The right one is: how many products can you properly create, check and promote? A few guidelines:

  • You're starting with ads or social media: One to three main products are enough, plus a few matching add-ons. Visitors come to a product page via the ad, not via the range.
  • You want to be found via Google: Here a broader range within the niche helps, because every good product and collection page is a separate chance in search. But only once the pages have real texts and your own images.
  • You have your own stock: As many as you can pre-finance and store.

What doesn't work: uploading 200 unchecked dropshipping products with supplier images to look "full". Every product needs manufacturer information, a real delivery time and images you're allowed to use. And as the merchant, you are liable for every product in your store. How to find good candidates and run the numbers is shown in finding winning products.

A store with only one or two products is no problem as long as it looks complete: a clear homepage, a detailed product page, an about page, contact details, shipping and returns information. Empty collections or placeholder products, on the other hand, look unfinished.

Landing page or full store?

With a single product, a one product store is basically a landing page with a checkout. With Shopify, you don't need an extra tool for this: many themes have a section that shows a single product with a buy button directly on the homepage. Below it come benefits, images, reviews, questions and answers. The homepage and product page then tell the same story.

The product page still remains the most important page, because ads and Google usually lead straight there. How to build it is covered in optimizing your Shopify product page, and how to rework the homepage in the theme editor in customizing your Shopify theme.

Product no longer selling: rework instead of rebuild

What happens when the one product stops selling? With a one product store that has the product name in the store name, often your only option is a new store. With a niche store, you swap the product and keep everything that already has value: domain, reviews, newsletter list, social media accounts, Google rankings.

If you do have to rework things, you can do it in Shopify without a new store: change the store name in the settings, connect a new domain and set it as the primary domain, adjust the theme and texts. Redirect old product URLs to suitable new pages instead of letting them lead nowhere. A new store only makes sense if the target group and brand really have nothing to do with each other, such as fishing gear and baby clothes.

In the long run, the goal is a store that stands for something anyway. What the path from product test to your own brand looks like is described in building your own brand instead of dropshipping.

FAQ

Can I sell several products in one Shopify store?

Yes, as many as you like. The number of products isn't limited on any Shopify plan. The fact that many videos create a new store for every product is due to the dropshipping testing model, not to Shopify. For most merchants, one store with several products on one theme makes more sense than many single stores, because costs, legal texts and maintenance only arise once.

Do I have to create a new store for every new product?

No. You simply add a new product to your existing store. You only need a new store if the product belongs to a completely different target group and doesn't fit your brand. Keep in mind that every additional store needs its own Shopify plan, its own legal texts and its own domain.

Can I run several stores with one Shopify account?

Yes, you can manage several stores under one login and switch between them. But each store needs its own paid plan. According to the Shopify pricing page, free expansion stores are only available with Shopify Plus. You don't need the trade registration or packaging registration twice, but you set up legal texts, the withdrawal button and payment providers per store.

Is a store with only one product trustworthy enough?

Yes, if it looks complete. What matters is a detailed product page with your own images, a complete imprint, clear information on shipping, delivery time and returns, a way to get in touch and an about page. It's not having few products that looks untrustworthy, but empty collections, placeholder texts, supplier images and missing legal texts.

Should I upload products first or post videos first?

Build a small, complete store first, then post content. If you post videos before people can buy, you give away your first interested visitors. One to three properly created products are enough for this. Add more products once you see what appeals to your target group and what they ask about in the comments.
